JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) at The Pennsylvania State University seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as its next Director of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (www.eesi.psu.edu ). Reporting directly to the Dean of the College, the Director serves as the leader and principal administrative officer for the Institute. Applications, inquiries, and nominations are invited.

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is the home of five academic departments: Energy and Mineral Engineering, Geography, Geosciences, Materials Science and Engineering, and Meteorology and Atmospheric Science; and three institutes: Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, EMS Energy Institute, and John A. Dutton e-Education Institute. The Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) is a leading research unit focused on advancing fundamental earth system science to inform creative solutions to environmental challenges with respect to energy choices, land use, and climate change. EESI currently hosts 24 tenure-line faculty associates, 22 research faculty, 7 postdoctoral researchers, and 9 administrative staff, generating over $6 million annually in sponsored research expenditures. EESI faculty are world-renowned scientists who cross disciplinary boundaries to understand the earth system, how it affects people, and how people affect it. EESI is part of Penn State’s Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE, https://iee.psu.edu ), which gives the Institute a breadth of influence that extends well beyond the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

The mission of EESI integrates three primary objectives:

To encourage examining the links between Earth’s chemical, physical, geological, biological, and social processes from atomic to global scales by supporting research by a diverse population of faculty and students investigating human and natural systems. To disseminate research findings, data, and tools through publications, presentations, websites, workshops, videos, seminars, testimony to public institutions, laboratory assistance, field trips, and advice to public and private organizations, and to communicate insights to the public, the broader scientific community, government, and community organizations to benefit stakeholders within Penn State and in the world beyond.

The College seeks a distinguished scholar and educator.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Demonstrate strong leadership and the scientific breadth and vision needed to foster and to lead multidisciplinary and collaborative research at the Institute

• Demonstrate the ability to attract human and financial resources for a successful research program

• Be an enthusiastic and articulate spokesperson for Penn State’s earth systems science research activities

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold an earned Doctorate degree and qualify for an appointment with tenure in one of the five academic departments in the College, and have a strong record of cross-disciplinary research and scholarly research in an earth systems science related area.

Review of applications will begin September 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. It is anticipated that the new Director will be appointed by December 2022 with a proposed start date no later than July 1, 2023.
