UChicagoGRAD, a part of the Office of the Provost that supports graduate education across the University, is an innovative national model for preparing graduate students and postdocs to succeed while at UChicago and beyond. With teams focusing on admissions, fellowship advising, writing support and public speaking training, diversity initiatives, career exploration and planning, and administration, UChicagoGRAD works with campus partners to support students and postdocs at every stage of their academic careers and beyond. UChicagoGRAD functions as a one-stop shop for graduate students and postdocs to access resources that support timely degree completion and to enhance professional preparation that helps them translate their degrees into a variety of careers. UChicagoGRAD works with academic departments and divisions as well as campus-wide offices to develop and implement outreach, recruitment, and yield efforts; graduate and postdoc-focused programs, workshops, and events; training and support tailored to UChicago graduate students and postdocs; and administrative practices and policies in support of graduate education.


Job Summary
 

The job assists in the design and implementation of advisory programs focused on students' career developments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary career advisor to PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and recent PhD alumni from the Social Sciences Division.

  • Engage in one-on-one advising that assists students and postdocs with career exploration, networking, job document preparation, and negotiation.

  • Develop and maintain resources that help social science PhD students navigate their career at UChicago and beyond.

  • Facilitate workshops, career conversations, and other professional development opportunities appropriate for PhD students in the social sciences.

  • Build knowledge of relevant career paths in academia, industry, nonprofits, and government.

  • Serve as a liaison between UChicagoGRAD and various social science PhD programs.

  • Develop relationships with faculty and staff in support of PhD student career development initiatives.

  • Send career newsletters and other communications that inform students of relevant opportunities.

  • Collaborate with employer relations specialists and engage with employers on behalf of students.

  • Contribute to large-scale events run by UChicagoGRAD and campus partners.

  • Follow up with students and graduate alumni to track progress and career outcomes.

  • Conducts mock interviews, reviews resumes and cover letters, and coordinates other interview related programming in both individual and group settings.

  • Develops original content for career related publications and assists with the editing and distribution of Career Services communications materials.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs or a relevant social science.

  • PhD in anthropology, political science, sociology, psychology, economics, comparative human development, or another relevant social science strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Advising/coaching/mentoring students in a one-on-one setting.

  • Providing career services or leading career development programs for graduate students.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in MS Office suite and career services management tools.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong customer service orientation.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

  • Excellent event and project management skills.

  • Excellent collaborator with experience working in a team environment.

  • Excellent cultural competency and ability to interact successfully with a diverse student body.

  • Ability to achieve objectives with minimal direction.

  • Familiarity with the tenure-track academic job market and application processes for students/postdocs in the social sciences.

  • Familiarity with some of the industry, government, and nonprofit career options that are common for PhD students in the social sciences, including recruitment and application processes.
