Professor of Practice in Data Science, Machine Learning

Cornell University

Job Description

Professor of Practice in Data Science, Machine Learning

The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech is looking to fill an endowed Professor of Practice position in data science and machine learning. We seek an experienced professional with a record of success in the application of machine learning or data-related techniques and principles (e.g., statistics, knowledge discovery, visualization, etc.) in an industry or government setting, with an interest and comfort in teaching Master’s degree-level students. The Professor of Practice will be expected to teach at least one Master’s course per semester, including a new Urban Data course in Spring of 2021; to mentor student projects; and to help facilitate and participate in engagement with external non-academic partners. It would also be possible for the candidate to pursue innovation and experimentation in areas related to data science and machine learning.

What makes this position particularly exciting is the opportunity to be part of a unique and still-evolving academic environment whose charter is to experiment in education, research, and entrepreneurship. Cornell Tech – and especially its Jacobs Institute – is a place that values the work of practitioners, integrating a real-world perspective into teaching and research. We embrace transdisciplinary work and favor faculty who are agile and love to explore new things. Given the fundamental roles of data science and machine learning in everything we do at Cornell Tech, this position could have significant influence across multiple departments and campuses, as well as real impact in New York City and beyond.

The Professor of Practice title is used for outstanding faculty with high-level experience in industry or equivalent. This is a non-tenure track position to be located on our campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City, and comes with a three-year renewable term. A 50% or 80% appointment may be possible.

This opportunity has been made possible by a generous gift from the Secunda Family Foundation.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have significant leadership experience and hold a senior technical, research or management position in industry or other equivalent non-academic organization plus a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related scientific or technical field. A master’s or Ph.D. is highly preferred. Advanced degrees may be in business or related fields. Professors of Practice must be leaders who remain current with standard practices and technological changes in their field.
  • 15+ years of experience in industry (including startups) or government in developing machine learning- and/or data-related technology and/or applying them in impactful ways with concrete outcomes
  • Some teaching experience, preferably in sizable graduate-level classes, in either Data Science or Machine Learning
  • A catalogue of peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations; could include patents, books, conference papers and talks, TED talks, etc.
  • Useful to have: experience in creating and implementing Data Science or Machine Learning curricula at the undergraduate or graduate level
