Position Description


Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of the Pacific invites applications for a one-year, full-time 9-month Instructor position starting August 22, 2022. Non-tenure-track faculty members collaborate in fulfilling the University’s mission to provide a superior, student-centered learning experience integrating liberal arts and professional education and preparing individuals for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities. The University of the Pacific is located in Stockton, California, named as the most racially and ethnically diverse big city in the United States in a 2020 US News & World Special Report.
Non-tenure track faculty members engage primarily in teaching. Teaching responsibilities may include non-majors Biology, General Biology, and one or more upper-division courses in the candidate’s area of interest (depending on need). Teaching responsibilities will be 5 courses over 2 semesters. Research space and resources will be provided to allow applicants to maintain research projects and engage undergraduate research students if desired. Area of specialization is open.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in biology, or a closely related field, to be awarded by December 2022 Educational or professional experience in the appropriate area of instructional responsibility
  • Enthusiasm for working with a diverse student body (Pacific is an AANAPISI Institution with 24% Latinx students)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Experience as primary instructor of record for a previous course
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative but not definitive of those that must be met by an employee. The job requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using a computer keyboard; the job often requires standing during lecture periods, when teaching in a lab, or during research; occasional walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching.
