Field of research:  Organ Dysfunction in the critically ill population with particular focus on kidney and pulmonary injury

The purpose of this Research Scientist 3 (1.0 FTE) lab manager position, based in Dr. Pavan Bhatraju's laboratory at the UW Harborview Medical Center Research campus, is to investigate risk of development of organ dysfunction in the critically ill population with particular focus on kidney and pulmonary injury. Projects involve processing of primary human blood and urine, completing biomarker measurements and human genotyping. We are investigating diseases such as sepsis, COVID-19 and acute kidney injury.

The Bhatraju laboratory is located within the Sepsis Center of Research Excellence (SCORE) and as the laboratory manager of the Bhatraju research group, the Research Scientist 3 (lab manager) will also engage with collaborating SCORE laboratory personnel including investigators, trainees and staff.

Working under the general direction of the principal investigator the Research Scientist 3 (lab manager) will directly conduct extramurally funded research and be responsible for the day to day laboratory operations.

Laboratory operations and management responsibilities will include establishing a schedule for experiment completion, assigning duties to a research scientist assistant and hourly employees, evaluating results, training other laboratory members on experimental protocols and specific laboratory techniques.  The laboratory manager will also be expected to contribute to development of research protocols and strategies for proposed lines of investigation, and assist postdoctoral fellows with onboarding into the laboratory environment.


In addition, the duties below will need to be worked on – both for the percent effort for each area and to repeat the specific lab management/operations duties below.

Specimen processing and management (50%):

• Map large sample sets, run RT-PCR Genotyping assays on QuantStudio7 RT-PCR instrument
• Run Meso-Scale Discovery (MSD) biomarker analysis
• Process, subaliquot and analyze COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patient samples in BSL-2 environment
• Develop and accurately reproduce laboratory protocols
• Train and oversee other members of the laboratory group on techniques and processes
• ELISA assays

Data Analysis (30%):

• Analyze raw data using MDS regression software
• Sample search in Freezerworks specimen management databases for further biochemical analysis
• Access data in other institutional databases (e.g., REDCap) when required
• Produce analysis for use in publications and sponsor reports

Laboratory management (20%):

• Maintain meticulous laboratory documentation
• Inventory and track supplies, orders and deliveries
• Maintain freezer map
• Assist with other laboratory management duties as required


Bachelor's degree in Molecular, Cellular and Development Biology or similar field of study with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


• Experience in using RT-PCR System for SNP detection and qPCR analysis
• Familiarity with ELISA-type assays (Meso Scale Discovery)
• Ability to analyze large data sets
