Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR invites applicants for a full time (1.00 FTE), nine-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a target start date of September 2023. The preferred area of research is experimental physical and/or organic chemistry, broadly defined.

The primary mission of the OSU Department of Chemistry is to provide a program of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral education in chemistry and to conduct research and scholarly activities focused on areas of chemistry important to human health, sustainable energy, and the environment. The department offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry and has a rapidly growing student body, including ~200 undergraduate majors and ~110 graduate students. The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university.
The College embraces instruction and research in disciplines ranging from the physical, chemical, mathematical, statistical sciences to the life sciences that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. The College of Science is an essential partner for three of the university’s world-class research centers, namely the Linus Pauling Institute, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Center for Genome Research and Bio-computing.

Position Duties
45% Instruction:
This position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Chemistry. The normal assignment corresponding to 45% commitment is three courses per academic year. A “course” is a 3 or 4-credit course that may be a lecture, a lab, or some combination thereof. This position will have responsibility for course design, composition of the course syllabus, selection of text and other supporting materials, choice of topics and subject matter, fashioning presentations, creating assessment tools, overseeing graduate teaching assistants assigned to the course, and assigning grades. Compliance with University academic regulations is expected.
45% Research:
This position will conduct research in their area of specialization in such a manner that attracts national and international recognition and establishes the employee’s reputation for scholarly excellence. Such activities are expected to include but not be limited to: supervision of students and postdoctoral associates in the execution of research; publication of research results in peer-reviewed literature; presentation of research results at scientific meetings and conferences; submission of grant proposals and administration of successful grants; compliance with University regulatory policies concerning grants and research.
10% Service:
Participation on Department, College, and University committees; participation in peer review activities; promotion of the profession through outreach and participation in professional societies.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Chemistry or an allied discipline.
Demonstrable ability or significant potential to conduct scientific research of sufficiently high quality to be published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrable ability to disseminate the results via high-impact scientific publications and conference presentations.
Demonstrable ability or significant potential for teaching excellence and commitment to student success that benefits the graduate and undergraduate programs of the Department of Chemistry in the College of Science.
Demonstrable ability or significant potential for mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars.
Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Tolerance for diverse ideas including those different from one’s own.
Commitment to free and objective inquiry based on a culture of evidence and critique.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Relevant postdoctoral experience.
Relevant teaching experience in physical chemistry and/or organic chemistry.
Demonstrable proficiency or significant potential to obtain external research funding.
Demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, including the potential for engagement in synergistic interactions with other investigators at or outside OSU.
Demonstrable interest in outreach and engagement with members of the general public.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Schedule as needed to perform duties, may include some evenings, nights and/or weekend.
