Under general supervision, the Research Assistant III performs complex research activities following established methods and procedures in support of a research project. Prepares all types of media and substances to be used in experiments; performs non-complex test that require alteration of substances while maintaining accurate records of data. Other functions are to document and manage scientific data, and to organize and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment. In addition, the incumbent may organize and perform surgical procedures on experimental animals following established techniques. 

Responsibilities include: Conduct complex research and analysis following general instructions and established methods and procedures required to determine such things as species of bacteria, composition, mineral or chemical content, and physical characteristics of substances; prepare all types of media and substances involving such processes as weighing materials, compounding mixtures, etc.; prepare materials for various types of tests, perform non-complex tests requiring alteration of substance and maintain accurate records of data gathered from assays, tests and other experimentation. Record, compile, organize and interpret statistical data; establish and maintain literary files, research methods and procedures through library sources. Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment used in laboratory experimentation and investigation. Maintain inventory of chemicals, supplies and equipment. Assist in requisitioning equipment; adjust calibrate, replace broken parts and keep equipment in good repair. May order new supplies as necessary, assist in maintaining research grant accounting. Assist in ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies, chemicals, specimens, charts, slides, etc.

May perform some surgical procedures on experimental animals following established techniques.
Contribute to the discussion and evaluation of experimental results suggesting corrective modifications in methodology when required. Provide instruction and assistance in the use of laboratory equipment and research methods and techniques to students and lower level technicians. Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in science related area of research and at least one year of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Ability to retain numerous details by reference to written notes without repeated oral instruction.
*Ability to handle calculations easily.
*Must be able to relate well to other laboratory personnel including technical, graduate, postdoctoral and professional staff as well as administrative personnel.
*Must be able to communicate well and follow directions
*Ability to operate and maintain standard and complex lab equipment

Preferred:
*Specific training in research related or other area where relevant, similar skills have developed
