About the Department
 

The James Franck Institute (JFI) is the premier institute in the US for research at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and materials science. We have great strength both in experiment and theory. We are a hub for activity in materials science and materials processing.


Job Summary
 

A full-time research professional with training in theoretical quantum condensed matter physics is needed to work with the PI and other senior collaborators. The Levin Group works primarily on projects relating to exotic superconductors and super?uids in both nature-made and synthetic materials. These are materials of interest to solid state physicists and to those who study ‘‘ultra-cold" atomic gases.

Responsibilities

  • Operates in a highly collaborative mode with all members of the group and with others in the Institute and with off-campus collaborators. Crucial is that these collaborations are expected to lead to publications in high quality journals.

  • Under general supervision of principal investigator, supervise and/or assist with the complex technical duties in a laboratory doing non-clinical research.

  • Compile documents and assists with interpreting presentations or reports stemming from scientific contributions in the laboratory.

  • Assists in maintaining and organizing lab space and inventory of laboratory supplies.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Gives frequent internal and occasional external talks and tutorials on the thinking and work progress.

  • Meets with visitors of the Institute and Physics department as needed.

  • Attends and present results at topical conferences.

  • Contributes new ideas and new directions to the research agenda.

  • Collaborate with postdoctoral scholars, and mentor and supervise an undergraduate within the group

  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Contributes to facilitating and promoting a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.

  • Leads the contributions to scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:        

  • PhD in Physics or related field.

Experience:       

  • Several years of postdoctoral education in theoretical quantum condensed matter physics.

  • The ideal candidate is trained in theoretical physics and is 4 or 5 years beyond their PhD.

  • The ideal candidate must have a substantial record of signi?cant publications in the focus areas of superconductivity and super?uidity.

  • A high level of mastery of numerical techniques used in service of solving more analytical problems is needed.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basic computer proficiency including computer programs and standard laboratory equipment.

  • Knowledge of relevant scientific fields.

  • Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures.

Preferred Competencies

  • Demonstrated problem-solving, organization, analytical, and coordination skills including attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend scientific and technical literature, and methods to stay abreast of developments in the field.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team and interact with a diverse workforce.

  • Ability to think creatively.

  • Demonstrated ability to articulate their scienti?c discoveries both in written publications and in talks.
