Structural Bioinformatics

Job Description

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Structural Bioinformatics Core Section (SBIS) , Bethesda, MD and surrounding area

Position Description::
The Structural Bioinformatics Core Section (SBIS) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Vaccine Research Center (VRC), located on the main National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland, is opening a postdoctoral position in the areas of computational biology and structural bioinformatics.

Formed in October 2009, SBIS is part of a multidisciplinary research environment at the VRC. The major goal of SBIS is to use available state-of-the-art structural bioinformatics tools as well as to develop novel methodologies to assist in designing vaccines against HIV-1 and other viruses (such as influenza and respiratory syncytial viruses). The efforts of SBIS can be divided into the following areas: protein structure analysis; computational analysis of sera for understanding the immune response; analysis of the antibodyome (Antibodyomics); and computational immunogen design. For details on SBIS research, visit Structural Bioinformatics Core Section.

We are looking for creative, self-motivated individuals who are interested in applying computational tools to challenging problems associated with the design of vaccines in a fast-paced and highly collaborative research environment. The individuals will work closely with one SBIS mentor to participate in a number of collaborations with experimental sections in the center and to develop novel methods for computational vaccine design.

Qualifications:

Applicants who meet the following requirements will be considered for the positions:

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a closely related field
  • Proficiency in either Python, R, Perl, C or C++
  • Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) scripting
  • Sufficient oral and written communication skills
  • Clear sense of organization, purpose, and accountability

Prior experience in at least three of the following computational areas:

  • Computational protein design
  • Computational immunology
  • Structure modeling and prediction
  • Structural bioinformatics
  • Analysis of Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data

Salary will be dependent on qualifications and determined based on the current NIH pay scale.
