Staff Psychologist

Job Summary:

The licensed psychologist reports directly to the Senior Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) responsible for providing brief therapy to a culturally diverse student population, crisis intervention, and consultation and referral to the university community. As educators, they are involved in the training and supervision of psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows and in psycho-educational outreach to the campus community.
As part of the larger staff in Student Life, the Staff Psychologists collaborate and cooperate across divisions and departments to create a supportive University community which encourages student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition and commits to:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct triage assessments to assess risk, determine suitable treatment, including appropriateness for a short-term therapeutic modality, cultural needs, and provide referrals on/off campus for students whose mental health needs are outside CAPS scope of services.

• Provide comprehensive, culturally responsive and affirming, individual, couples and group therapy services to students within a brief therapy model.

• Provide crisis intervention services, including assessing suicidal or homicidal risk.  Make appropriate referrals and/or facilitate off-campus hospitalization, as needed.

• Work as a member of a team regarding agency administrative functioning (providing coverage, supervision, training, developing policies, updates to the CAPS newsletter or website, etc.).

• Enrich and enhance services offered to focus on diversity issues and the needs of underrepresented populations.

• Provide information and referral for individuals who are ineligible for CAPS services.

• Provide culturally affirming clinical services to historically marginalized groups including, BIPOC students, LGBTQQAI, gender non-binary, and students of all abilities.

• As a part of the CAPS on-call rotation, provide 24-hour crisis consultation to Office of Community Living, Student Life Division, Public Safety, and other administrative units of the University staff (approximately 2-3 weeks/semester).

• Provide follow-up to callers who utilized CAPS after-hours phone consultation line, as needed.

• Provide consultation and mental health information for families/friends of students, faculty, & staff.

• Provide educational outreach services to campus groups as requested or needed, including outreach to students underrepresented at CAPS.

• Serve as guest lecturer on relevant professional topics as requested by faculty.

• Collaborate with other campus resources to provide ‘crisis debriefing’ to campus community in the event of community trauma

• Provide multiculturally affirming and responsive supervision to psychology doctoral Interns and postdoctoral fellows. Provide 1:1 weekly meetings; review and provide constructive feedback on all intakes, progress notes and termination summaries; review and provide feedback of videotaped sessions, as needed, generate mid and end-year comprehensive written evaluations; provide crisis supervision when needed; and foster the professional, growth, m development of supervisees.

• Annually, review applications, interview psychology interns and postdoctoral candidates, and provided feedback for the selection of CAPS trainees.

• Provide mandated assessment as requested

• Create and present culturally-attuned in-service and intercultural training seminars

• Attend Inservice trainings and intercultural seminars, as appropriate.

• Participate in weekly case conference seminars.

• Attend weekly staff and licensed staff meetings

• Serve on interdepartmental hiring committees and interview candidates as requested.

• Represent center at campus events and serve on campus-wide committees as requested.

• Adhere to ethical principles of the profession as articulated by the American Psychological Association; maintain up to date case files.

• Maintain current, valid license to practice psychology in the state of California, including obtaining the required continuing education units for each 2-year renewal cycle.

• Participate in staff/professional development activities.

• Other administrative tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or Education from an APA accredited doctoral program preferred.

• License to practice psychology in the State of California or eligible within 6 months.

• Experience within a university counseling center and prior brief therapy experience strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to provide culturally appropriate therapeutic interventions,

• Ability to manage multiple and complex caseloads.

• Strong presentation and facilitation skills

• Strong written and oral communication skills

• An interest in working within the context of a diverse, Jesuit Catholic university located in an urban, multicultural area.

• Knowledge and skill with current technology is also preferred.
