Description

It is much easier to count larger numbers of electrons than photons. This project concerns i) counting bursts of photons with uncertainty of less than one, by counting photoelectrons (metrology), and ii) generating counted bursts of photons, encoded with quantum information, by generating a counted number of electrons and using radiative recombination to generate photons (quantum information).

This is a new project with components in i) nanoelectronics measurements, ii) single-photon measurements, and iii) nanofabrication. We are looking for candidates who have interest in, and some experience with, at least one and ideally two or three of those areas; the candidates with best fit are likely those with PhD’s in Physics or EE (although anyone is welcome to apply if his/her experience and training is relevant). Furthermore, since this is a new project, it offers an opportunity for a postdoc to be involved in the start of building a new NIST program that is likely to grow substantially in the next few years.
