Description

This research opportunity focuses on assessing the performance of reinforced concrete structures that have been deteriorated due to aging (e.g., freezing and thawing), chemical attacks (e.g., carbonation, chlorides, and sulfates), chemical reactions (e.g., alkali silica and alkali carbonate), and corrosion of reinforcing bars. Accurate characterization of member strength and stiffness degradation is essential in predicting potential failure modes and reduction in service life of concrete structures. Opportunities exist for (1) development of databases on material and mechanical properties of degrading concrete due to aging and chemical attacks and reactions, (2) experimental and numerical studies on the rate of strength and stiffness loss of concrete members affected by alkali silica reaction (ASR) and other degradation mechanisms, and (3) the development of methodologies that enable engineers to predict the behavior of reinforced concrete structural systems that are undergoing strength and stiffness degradation due to ASR and other effects. Emphasis is placed on testing of structural members to validate numerical simulations that can be used to evaluate performance and service life of aging structures.
