Job Description


Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will work in the Flavor Group on the Mu2e experiment. Mu2e will search for Charged Lepton Flavor and Lepton Number Violation using atomic-captured muons produced at the FNAL muon campus.  The first Mu2e beam physics run is scheduled to begin in 2025.  The LBNL Mu2e group leads the development of software and firmware for the Mu2e tracker, the experiment’s central detector.  We are also developing multi-variate machine learning algorithms for signal extraction.  The successful candidate will assist with those efforts, as well as participate in the cosmic ray and beam commissioning of the detector.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop software and firmware for the Mu2e experiment and assist in the commissioning of the detector.
  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration with other members of the LBNL Mu2e group.
  • Interact with LBNL and other investigators working on similar or related scientific problems.
  • Report results to supervisor.
  • Prepare research papers for publication.
  • Present research findings at seminars and conferences.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor Undergraduate or Ph.D. students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in physics with zero to two years of postdoctoral experience since Ph.D.
  • Experience in particle physics research.
  • Demonstrated ability to attain a high level of achievement as an independent researcher.
  • Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in C++ software and/or firmware development.
  • Experience developing machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience in alignment and/or calibration of tracking detectors.
  • Ability to mentor students.

    • This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience when first assuming the position, and any extension is subject to the constraint of spending no more than five years total in a postdoctoral appointment. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
    • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
    • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
