Shift
Typically Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm, with some nights and weekends possible due to experimentation.
Job Summary
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Spassieva Laboratory at the University of Kentucky, Lexington KY. The postdoctoral scientist will be working on projects studying sphingolipid neurotoxicity, specifically investigating: 1) the role of sphingolipid pathway in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and 2) mechanisms underlying sphingoid base-induced neurotoxicity in ataxia and other neurodegenerative diseases. The research in these projects includes utilizing neuronal and glial primary cell cultures and animal models and employing contemporary technologies for molecular, biochemical, imaging, and lipid analyses.
The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge in neuroscience and/or cell biology and experience with neuronal and/or glial primary cultures and with rodent animal models. Knowledge and experience in lipids are desired, but not limiting for a successful application. The successful candidate is expected to have substantial level of independence in project development and manuscript writing. Candidates who have recently obtained their PhD degree will be preferred.
The successful candidate will benefit from a highly stimulating and collaborative research environment, and an organized training plan to support their future career goals. Although the projects are currently funded an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application, therefore, postdocs are encouraged to apply for a fellowship funding when possible or if eligible to apply to the University of Kentucky awarded T32 training programs.
