Position Description:
The Department of Physics in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Postdoctoral Research Scholar position beginning in Fall 2022. This is a fixed-term, fiscal year (twelve month) appointment with no tenure implications. Candidates must be within five years from receipt of their doctoral degree. The Photoemission and Bright Beams Lab led by Prof. Karkare at ASU is seeking to hire a postdoctoral research associate to work in the fields of nano-fabrication and photoemission-based electron sources for particle accelerators and electron microscopes. The position is funded by the NSF Science and Technology Center for Bright Beams (CBB). The successful candidate will be a part of this center and will be expected to work collaboratively with researchers at other CBB affiliated institutes (Cornell, UCLA, SLAC, LBNL etc).

The Photoemission and Bright Beams Lab at ASU is a unique photocathode research lab with thin-film materials growth facilities and atomic scale surface diagnostics connected in UHV to various photoemission diagnostics (PhotoEmission Electron Microscope, sub-meV-scale energy-momentum distribution measurement capability) along with and a 200 kV DC electron gun with a cryogenically cooled cathode. The range of ongoing projects in the lab include understanding the fundamental physics of low energy photoemission, developing novel cathode materials and thin film growth techniques, developing nano-scale photoemission electron sources, developing keV beam diagnostic techniques testing ultra-bright cathodes in high field environments for electron microscopy diffraction and X-ray Free Electron Laser applications. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to one of more of these areas with a particular focus on the development of nanoscale photoemission sources.

Minimum Qualifications: • A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in experimental physics, material science, or chemistry by the time of the appointment. • Evidence of effectively communicating research through conference presentations and/or journal papers.

Desired Qualifications: • Expertise in handling and design of ultra-high-vacuum systems. • Experience in materials growth, characterization and surface diagnostics. • Experience electron beam optics and beam diagnostics. • Experience in photoemission spectroscopy • Experience in nanofabrication and use of cleanroom techniques.

To apply, please submit the following materials electronically using this link: http://apply.interfolio.com/108786 1.) a cover letter; 2.) a current curriculum vitae with publication list; 3.) Three recommendation letters should be included 4.) a detailed summary of research experience and interests 5.) a statement addressing how your past and/or potential contributions to diversity and inclusion will advance ASU’s commitment to inclusive excellence

The initial deadline to apply is August 16, 2022. If not filled, applications will be evaluated every week thereafter until the search is closed.
