Description

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate in geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, with an emphasis on GIS use in natural resources. The research associate (working with Dr. Sigrid Smith in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Delaware State University (DSU) and outside collaborators) will contribute to a USDA-funded project on spatial planning for sustainable agriculture. This will be a 100% grant funded position, currently budgeted through May 2023 with possibility of extension. Project summary: Humans receive diverse benefits from natural and restored wetlands as well as agricultural lands. The research aims to assess the impacts of sea level rise on agriculture and wetland ecosystem service provisioning in Delaware. The research will evaluate how wetland services change with proximity to agriculture, statistically pinpoint "hotspots" with high delivery of diverse benefits and investigate the best management practices (BMPs) promoting hotspots near agricultural lands, and use sea level predictions to identify potential marginal croplands and service hotspots that may be lost. The project also strengthens DSU's capabilities in spatial analysis through training and outreach. Responsibilities: The position is 50% research, 50% teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to perform and document GIS analyses, design and lead GIS course modules and workshops, and help to develop metadata and products from both research and teaching activities for publication. Teaching duties include courses and training workshops in remote sensing and GIS, including preparing novel products for publication in science education journals. Workshops are intended for graduate students, faculty, and staff, and the workshops may be in hybrid format. Additional responsibilities include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and contributing to cooperative research efforts for the project. Qualifications

Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. from an accredited university in a natural resource-related science with extensive experience in GIS and/or remote sensing, or in geospatial science with extensive experience in applications in natural resources. All candidates should be able to perform high-quality teaching and have an active record of publication. The ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, students, collaborators, and representatives of local governmental and non-governmental organizations is required.
