Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine consisting of approximately 50 people. This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students, dental students, and graduate students. The department also provides guidance and research experience to graduate students seeking advanced degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty (16)-directed research programs of which many are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession by activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities. |
Job Duties | The Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is looking for a talented postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of Akshaya K. Meher. The scholar will participate in the laboratory’s mission to understand the interaction of immune cells and develop immunotherapeutics. Primarily, the scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research involving the roles of B lymphocytes and innate immune cells in murine models of aortic aneurysms and diabetes. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of the project involving gene cloning, mouse breeding, minor murine surgery, phenotyping murine immune cells using multicolor flow cytometry, isolation and culture of primary immune cells, Western blotting, intracellular signaling, real-time RT-PCR, immunohistology, and confocal microscopy. The scholar is expected to perform hypothesis-driven research and assist PI in submitting extramural grant applications and manuscripts. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, perform experiments, collection of primary and reproducible data, detail record keeping, scientific writing, supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, use of descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety and chemical safety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 95% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to research. Approximately 5% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory. |
Minimum Education/Experience | The candidate should hold a PhD in biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, molecular biology, or a closely related field. Proficiency in standard molecular biology, real-time RT-PCR, protein expression, flow cytometry, ELISA, Western blotting, mouse handing techniques, and minor surgery are required. Proficiency in hypothesis-driven experimental design, data analysis, and record keeping are required. Interested candidates must be capable of working independently and have demonstrated excellence in both written and oral communication skills. English proficiency is required. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education | Preferred candidates will have a strong publication record including first authored publications in high quality peer-reviewed cardiovascular journals. Preferred candidates will have consistently presented their research at national scientific meetings. Candidates with experience in studying intracellular signaling, minor mouse surgery, primary cell isolation and culture, and advanced flow cytometry techniques are preferred. |
