The Department of Medicine – Section of Immunology, Allergy & Rheumatology is seeking a full-time dedicated scientist to undertake research projects in the field of DNA damage repair, innate and adaptive immune responses, and allergic inflammation. The research will focus on the identification of the roles of DNA repair proteins in protein-interactomes that regulate chronic airway lung and brain inflammation. Human tissue samples, tissues from complex animal models involving wild-type and gene-knockout mice and/or cultured cells will be utilized and analyzed using the most advanced molecular technologies and advanced single-cell techniques such as DNA damage and repair analysis, bulk and scRNAseq, proximity ligation assay, mass spectrometry, CYTOF, Nanostring, protein and DNA interactomes, innate and adaptive immune responses and many other assays. The postdoctoral associate will work under the general guidance of the principal investigator (Dr. Sanjiv Sur's laboratory; https://www.bcm.edu/people-search/sanjiv-sur-31324) and collaboratively with other scientists in the same and other partnering laboratories. A recent Ph.D. degree that requires exposure to Immunology is highly desirable but not essential. The candidate must possess a proactive, team-oriented attitude with a strong work ethic and excellent multi-task and organizational skills.

Scientific experiments and duties

• Plans, directs, and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments.
• Designs and accurately performs in vivo and in vitro experiments involving animals and humans.
• Collects and correctly processes cells from human and mice tissues and cultured cells for single-cell preparations, DNA damage and repair analysis, bulk and scRNAseq, proximity ligation assay, mass spectrometry, CYTOF, Nanostring, protein and DNA interactomes, innate and adaptive immune responses.
• Modifies and constantly improves the planned experiments based on self-critique and input from colleagues and PI.
• Coordinates activities with other scientists in the PI’s lab and with other collaborating labs.
• Effectively uses and arranges core labs for immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, DNA and RNA sequencing, mass spectrometry.
• Writes original manuscripts with the data generated, and reviews articles. Carefully reviews literature to write paper and discuss.
• Contributes to writing parts of grants.
• Presents data in daily lab meetings, local meetings and national meetings.

Laboratory management

• Orders lab items and animals.
• Checks all functionality and safety of equipment in the lab regularly.
• Manages cryotanks and refrigerators.
• Manages and contributes to safety in the lab.
• Writes and revises animal and human protocols.

• MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
• No experience.

• A recent Ph.D., MD or MD-PhD degree with exposure to Immunology and/or DNA damage repair is highly desirable but not essential.
• Having prior original first-author publications in high-impact journals is highly desirable.
• Possessing a proactive, team-oriented attitude with a strong work ethic and having excellent multi-tasking and organizational skills is highly desirable.
• Previous experience in coordinating complex research activities and presenting data in national meetings is preferred.
