The Bauer Lab in the Department of Biology at Villanova University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in a collaborative study of African Lizard Malaria in collaboration with Temple University. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct field and laboratory research for an NSF-funded project focused on the phylogeny, taxonomy and diversity of Haemosporida parasites of lizards in Africa. The research will entail extensive field work in Angola and will involve the capture of reptile hosts, collection of blood and tissue samples and lab-based genetic and morphological characterization of Haemosporida. The successful candidate may develop additional projects in parasitology, herpetology or coevolutionary studies. The position is based at Villanova University but research will also be conducted at the Institute of Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine at Temple University. The preferred start date is December 1, 2022. The position is available for two years. Contact aaron.bauer@villanova.edu for further project details.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in biology, zoology, parasitology, or related field by the appointment start date. Prior experience in tropical fieldwork with vertebrates and/or parasitology in wildlife. Ability to prepare blood smears and collect tissue samples. Laboratory and analytical skills in molecular phylogenetics. Proficiency in written and spoken Portuguese. Excellent time management, communication, and troubleshooting skills. Record of successful research project design and execution, including publication of results.
Preferred Qualifications:
Database management experience. Previous experience in Haemosporida or reptile systematics. Previous experience managing the activities of undergraduate laboratory and field assistants.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
The ability to conduct physically demanding work in a tropical setting. Field activities include night work.
