Job Description:

Summary:

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Fellow position is to perform specialized research activities and complete advanced experimental procedures in an environmental/transportation stress-focused laboratory independently.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Designs, discusses, and performs diverse experimental models and techniques related to the study of environmental stress physiology in cattle, sheep and goats at the Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station (WTARS)
  • Contributes to general laboratory operations, including biological sample processing, colorimetric techniques and operates and maintains experimental equipment.
  • Records and analyzes data from experiments.
  • Contributes to the development of performance standards, selection of methodology, instrumentation and coordination of the biochemical, physiology and instrumentation functions to ensure conformance with research goals.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction Principal Investigator.
  • Attends and participates in seminars and supervise student employees.      

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage research experiments using food animals (cattle, sheep, goat) and provide support for research and teaching, and perform standard research procedures in collaboration with project investigator.
  • Analyze data and write manuscripts.
  • Manage biological samples (blood, fecal, saliva, urine, hair, etc.) collection, processing and storage or submission to labs for testing.


Requirements:

Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • DVM and MS in Environmental Stress Physiology, Animal Science or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience directly related to the duties specified.
  • Evidence of peer reviewed publications in high impact journals.
  • Experience with biological sample collection; livestock feeding and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications Education: DVM and MS degrees in Environmental Stress Physiology, Animal Science or related field

Supervisory responsibilities: Supervise/train student employees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Skills: Effective communication skills are essential for functioning efficiently and productively in this team-oriented environment; skills in large animal handling; problem solving skills; mechanical skills; attention to detail.

Additional skills: Supervisory/leadership skills; communication and research presentation skills, comfortable working with biological samples and data.

Typical physical demands: Ability to perform practical and manual activities; heavy lifting often required with the ability to lift at least 50 pounds; mobility necessary for the completion of essential functions. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, etc.

The salary for each position is based on the grade/tier in which the position is placed, and the salary within the grade/tier is based on the number of years of related experience or number of years in the hiring rank.
