Financial Aid Retention Specialist - Genesee Community College

Job Description

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

This position provides financial aid counseling including assisting parents and students in completing financial aid applications, works with scholarship information and website for non-traditional students, and oversees a financial emergency referral process designed to assist students facing financial emergency.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Become thoroughly knowledgeable with all appropriate federal, state, and local financial assistance programs and their guidelines and regulations.
  • Provide financial aid counseling including assisting parents and students in completing financial aid applications and effectively explaining the financial aid process to families on a one-to-one basis, as well as in group situations. Must be able to work with diverse groups of populations.
  • Manage federal verification process to ensure compliance with Department of Education requirements. Update verification forms and processes annually.
  • Determine eligibility of individual student's financial assistance using professional judgment when appropriate. Support office operations in the areas of veterans' affairs, the federal loans, and state assistance. Also responsible to interpret and explain attendance and academic expectations to students.
  • Serve as the liaison to College Village to assist with students using aid to pay for housing.
  • Serve as the Financial Aid Office's Argos reporting manager.
  • Support the campus centers by fielding complicated cases from the respective center(s)
  • Work with scholarship information and web site for non-traditional students and serve as the liaison for foundation scholarships.
  • Oversee a financial emergency referral process designed to work with students who are experiencing a financial emergency related to books, food, transportation, and/or housing.
  • Serve as the liaison for the College's tuition purge process to the Campus Centers, and the Records and Student Account Offices.
  • Fulfill other related financial aid responsibilities as requested by the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Services/Director of Financial Aid or the Vice President of Student Services.


Job Requirements:


QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Background

Bachelor's or Associate's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

A minimum of three years' experience (or five with an Associate's) in advisement/customer service, administration or a related field. Financial Aid experience preferred. Experience with data management desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to work efficiently and build relationships with college students and their parents. Ability to work cooperatively with members of the faculty and staff as well as state and federal liaison personnel. Ability to handle stressful situations. Ability and willingness to accept individual responsibility for accomplishment of program objectives with limited supervision. Ability to supervise and delegate tasks to student interns when applicable. Ability to work in a structured environment. Good analytical skills required. Computer skills including above average data base management skills preferred. The ability to interpret complex information for customers to ensure understanding. Exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students and their families. Is mindful of and develops solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically.


Additional Information:


This is a twelve (12) month position. Salary, benefits, and conditions of employment are set by the GEA contract. Evening and weekend hours may be required.
