Job Description

We are seeking an energetic, highly-organized candidate to fill the full-time position of Director of Foundations and Special Projects. The Director of Foundations and Special Projects provides strategic and operational oversight of Connecticut Public’s philanthropic giving with a focus on grants and foundations and multi-channel fundraising for key strategic initiatives. Focus includes, but is not limited to, planning and directing the processes and coordination of activities related to prospecting, cultivating and soliciting funds from grantors, foundations and government to support program needs, developing and articulating case statements and proposals aligned with CT Public funding priorities and strategic initiatives, and researching and writing proposals for capital funding needs of CT Public. This position will lead efforts to increase grant and other funding sources as CT Public expands its geographic reach, content and programming plans and strategic growth initiatives.

Our Director will be excited by working for a public media organization, in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities, and identifying innovative ways of increasing grant revenue and contributions. The successful candidate will consider big-picture questions, as well as analytical data as we build a deeper culture of philanthropy, more fully expanding our funding portfolio.

General Summary

This leadership role requires a team player with a passion for people and the transformative power of cultivating relationships with grantors and donors to align interests and passions with giving opportunities. This position will report to the Chief Development Officer. The individual will work with multiple departments in the Company to develop strategic and targeted granting and giving opportunities in an effort to increase funding each year.

Essential Job Functions
The Director of Foundations and Special Projects provides a wide range of services. Applicants must have the ability to complete the following essential job functions:

  • As the lead fundraiser for the NENC, coordinate efforts with station partners to ensure effective collaborative fundraising to meet revenue goals.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, initiatives, and outreach to meet the grants and foundations, NENC and other fundraising goals.
  • Initiates contact, cultivates, solicits and maintains relationships with potential grantors / donors managing own portfolio as well as supporting staff with grant caseload responsibilities.
  • Manage a portfolio of federal, state and local foundations and solicit funding from new foundations and donors to advance core operating and program goals, Fairfield County expansion and NENC revenue goals including grant sources through state, regional, national and federal sources.
  • Oversee an ambitious, comprehensive fundraising plan with responsibility for growth of the grants and foundation funding area, developing multi-channel fundraising strategies for the NENC and other funding priorities and stewardship of grantors and donors. Oversee Institutional Advancement-Grants and Foundations budget and work with Finance team to ensure effective systems for tracking financial and non-financial goals.
  • Oversee major CPB grants working directly with CPB staff and internal colleagues, submitting grants and reports to ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Oversee operations for grant deliverables, acknowledgments, financial tracking, policies and practices, and general workflows.
  • Deliver on annual revenue goals for the grants and foundation department as well as annual and multi-year revenue goals for the New England News Collaborative (NENC) of which Connecticut Public serves as the lead station with a portfolio of support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, grantors, and individual contributions.
  • Work with Senior Director of Major Gifts and content teams to develop strategic priorities for institutional advancement fundraising.

Responsibilities
The Director of Foundations and Special Projects has many responsibilities. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Attends Connecticut Public and outside events to represent the organization, for networking and external relations.
  • Initiates contact, cultivates, solicits and maintains relationships with potential grantors / donors managing own portfolio as well as supporting staff with grant caseload responsibilities.
  • Leads team members through the transformative power of cultivating talent and ability through professional growth, supervising, and mentorship.
  • Manages Grants and Foundations budget and works with Finance team to ensure effective systems for tracking financial and non-financial goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Monitors plans through successful implementation to reach quarterly and annual revenue goals and to ensure that the funding efforts are effective, ethical and well-leveraged.
  • Oversees grant and donor systems and processes, including use of CRM for reporting and tracking.
  • Oversees the acquisition of accurate project information and budgets from Content, DSB, Finance and others others for use in grants and proposals.
  • Oversees the reporting and tracking of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant for NENC.
  • Represents Institutional Advancement team at key meetings, including external meetings with grantors, donors and prospects and internal meetings.
  • Supervises the Grant Writer and ensures compliance with effective policies and practices, workflows and day-to-day operations.
  • With Chief Development Officer, Senior Director of Major Gifts and other team members, participates in the planning for priority funding areas (e.g. NENC, Fairfield expansion, investigative journalism) and development of strategies and implementation.
  • Works with Connecticut Public’s CRM system (NGOC, a Salesforce product) to document grantor and donor information, track activities and progress to goal and use research methods to identify and assess grantors and donors for alignment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:

  • Grant writing with a proven and successful track record raising money from community and private foundations, government sources, and corporate foundations.
  • Experience in writing successful proposals for large, medium and small granting sources.
  • Fundraising campaign planning and implementation.
  • Multi-level fund development strategies.
  • Marketing, development, and project management.

Skill In:

  • Analyzing data and information and ability to interpret into powerful funding proposals.
  • Budget development for grant and fundraising proposals.
  • CRM practices, strategies, and techniques for donor tracking and wealth screening.
  • Cultivating relationships with grantors and other supporters.
  • Writing successful proposals for large, medium and small granting sources.
  • Grant processes, principles, methods and practices, including prospect research.
  • Microsoft Office Suite and donor management resources.
  • Presenting and communicating, in both oral and written forms, to interface with various networks, board members, departments and levels of management.
  • Relationship management skills that both enhance internal organization relations, external community interactions and business development opportunities.

Ability to:

  • Develop successful grantor and donor relationships through cultivation and stewardship.
  • Identify and take ownership of issues, be accountable, and drive them to resolution.
  • Take initiative, multitask and/or prioritize workload and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work effectively with multiple departments, with sometimes competing priorities, to identify and source funding opportunities to advance the Company’s mission.
  • Work flexible and variable hours as needed to achieve goals.
  • Work with diverse constituencies.

The successful candidate must possess a visceral distaste for office politics and gossip.

Work Environment
The Director of Foundations and Special Projects operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers, as well as database software. The Institutional Advancement department is currently operating in a hybrid work structure with some days in the office and others remote.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods, stand, and talk, lift objects of less than twenty (20) pounds, and hear. Manipulative skills, which require hand-eye coordination, such as reading, typing, and writing are also required. Additionally, the employee must have the ability to concentrate for extended periods with frequent interruption and understand and relate to the concepts behind specific ideas. These physical demands, with or without reasonable accommodations, are required to perform the essential functions of this job.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with supervision requirements. Days and hours of work vary, but often run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekend, evening, and holiday hours may be necessary. Some travel within the state expected.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in relatable field AND a minimum of eight (8) years’ direct and sustained professional work experience in Grants and/or Development in a non-profit environment AND/OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Pay: $85,280.00 - $106,600.00 per year
