Position Summary
For over 150 years, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in NYC has been dedicated to discovering, interpreting, and disseminating—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe.

We are looking for a creative, talented, and energetic colleague to join the American Museum of Natural History as a part-time Educator of Physical Science.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teach science courses to and develop curriculum for New York City Youth in museum programs from grades 6-12
  • Write new curricula and revise existing curricula as the opportunity arises
  • Learn and deliver courses in a manner that aligns with the Museum’s pedagogical approach, which may include co-teaching courses alongside an AMNH scientist
The Educator of Physical Science will report directly to the Senior Manager of Curriculum and Teaching and will work closely with other staff educators and program coordinators members of the full-time educator team. Applicants must be available to work on select Saturdays and Sundays, and when working on weekdays, be available to work until 7pm.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a Physical Science field such as Earth Science, Geology, Astronomy, Astrophysics, etc.
  • Experience teaching urban youth
  • Demonstrated knowledge and mastery of physical science content and material
  • Demonstrated passion for youth education. Previous experience working with youth ages 11 to 18
  • Ability to work self-sufficiently (e.g. organized, good time management), and the ability and confidence to request help and direction
  • Excellent communication skills, both written (emails) and oral
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in instructional practices through reflection and applied feedback
  • Commitment to issues of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education or Science is a plus
  • Familiarity in collaborating with communities of color
  • Experience co-teaching is a plus
  • Experience with coding, computational thinking, or data science
  • Experience with culturally-responsive and/or justice-oriented pedagogy
