The Department of Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to conduct research in biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in cereals and their wild relatives. The project focuses on understanding the genetic mechanisms of stress tolerance in cereals using genetics, genomics, and molecular biology tools coupled with phenotyping of abiotic and biotic stress traits. To meet the project goals, the research will involve, but is not limited to, phenotyping segregating plant populations for various cereal diseases and abiotic traits under field and greenhouse conditions, identify genes involved in stress tolerance using genetic mapping and genome-wide association studies, functionally characterize identified genes(s), conduct transcriptomics/genomics experiments, use bioinformatics/genetics/statistics tools for data analysis, present research findings to collaborators and at national/international conferences, and prepare project reports and manuscripts for journals.

The successful candidate will have experience in: conducting biotic and abiotic stress tolerance research; phenotyping plants in the field/greenhouse for disease reaction and/or abiotic stress (drought, heat, etc.); and handling and analyzing genomics data, molecular characterization of genes, etc. The postdoc will communicate research findings with project investigators Dr. Upinder Gill and Dr. Rajeev Gupta on a regular basis. In addition, the postdoc is expected to work closely with graduate students in the lab. The postdoc must also be able to communicate effectively both verbally and written.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in plant pathology, plant sciences, botany, or related discipline
  • Sound knowledge of and demonstrated experience in biotic/abiotic stress tolerance
  • Experience in plant molecular biology, genetics, and genomics
  • Experience in bioinformatics data analysis
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in genome-wide association analysis and gene cloning in plants
  • Knowledge of cereal diseases and host-pathogen interactions
  • Knowledge of molecular tools and classical genetics
  • Knowledge of programming languages used in bioinformatics

Advertised salary: $45,000+ depen ding on experience
