Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.2 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor. The Position
San Diego Miramar College, a student-ready college, invites all qualified candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Professor, Diesel Technology. Hours and days of the assignment are 40 hours per week, Monday to Saturday.

Hours and days of the assignment are 40 hours/week. However, the schedule will vary based on the class schedule.
Major Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor of Diesel Technology reports to the Dean of Business, Technical Careers, and Workforce Initiatives. Major responsibilities include:
Teach college-level lecture and laboratory courses in a variety of diesel technology topics using traditional and alternative methods of instruction.
Utilize instructional knowledge and methods of the discipline that enhance student learning and adapt to diverse learning styles.
Advise and assist students in education and career development.
Work collaboratively with department and interdisciplinary faculty to plan, develop, implement, and assess courses in the diesel technology subject area that will provide technical/professional training and preparation for career pathways.
Maintain currency in diesel technology, industry trends, and technology innovations for the development of new courses and curriculum revisions in order to meet industry objectives and emerging occupations.
Participate in departmental and faculty functions including program review, curriculum development, assessment of student learning outcomes, office hours/student advisement, training and evaluation of part-time faculty, and varied campus affairs including service on college-wide and districtwide committees.
Collaborate with industry, community, and professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development.
Serve as an active member of the district and college industry advisory boards.
Work effectively with students from a variety of cultural, educational, and occupational backgrounds.
Serve as faculty advisor for the Diesel Skills Club at Miramar College and participate in regional, state, and national competitions.
Instruct theory and lab classes for pre and post-employment students in diesel-powered equipment maintenance related to: powertrain, hydraulics, electrical systems, electronic systems, air brakes, steering, suspensions, air conditioning, diesel engines, and undercarriage.
Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the district-adopted description and collective bargaining agreement.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions.
1. Any Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR,
2. Any Associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR,
3. Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential (valid for life) in Automotive and Diesel Mechanics and Related Technologies; OR,
4. The equivalent.

  • Experience developing industry contacts, including assessment and placement of students in related jobs.
  • Demonstrated experience creating a conducive learning environment, managing class time, and providing feedback in the classroom.
  • Proficiency in designing and teaching diesel technology courses, both lecture and laboratory, in a variety of modalities including hybrid and fully online (synchronous and asynchronous).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with departmental faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Willingness to participate in a variety of departmental and campus activities.
  • Evidence of commitment to remaining current in the discipline to maintain program excellence and professional development in diesel technology.
  • ASE Medium/ Heavy Duty Truck certifications T2-T8 (current or expired)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively teach diesel technology courses at the community college.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach diesel-related manipulative skills in a lab setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prepare, and present diesel lessons effectively, in classroom and lab settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair and overhaul heavy-duty diesel engines (9L-15L).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair and teach commercial truck (Class 6-8) powertrain, air brakes, steering, driveline, and suspension systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair and teach heavy truck and heavy equipment electrical systems and electronic diagnostics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair and teach heavy equipment powertrain, brakes, final drives, undercarriage, and steering systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair heavy-duty transmissions, and hydraulic transmissions, including Cat power shift transmissions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively repair hydraulics and load sensing and pressure compensating systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and integrate computer technology in instruction, including current software related to teaching and training of diesel technicians.

Conditions of Employment:
