SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. The Rural Economy, Environment and Society (REES) Department is one of the largest groups of economists and social scientists working in the rural, agricultural and land based sectors in the UK.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and Engineering sciences. We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fulfil a combined role of research technician and agricultural instructor. The role will be embedded within a strong team and will provide technical support to research activities and agricultural instruction within SRUC Education. The post holder will play an important and exciting role in supporting current and future project activity as well as developing the practical skills of students.

The post will be based near Edinburgh at the Beef and Sheep Research Centre (BSRC), within the Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and Engineering Sciences. The post will form part of a team of three technicians based at the BSRC and will support research across ruminant production systems. This role will also deliver practical instruction to agriculture students alongside the education team based at the Kings Buildings Edinburgh Campus.

Key areas of technician responsibility will include:
• day to day care of livestock maintaining high welfare standards
• data/sample collection, storage, and management
• operating and maintaining a range of specialist research equipment.
• providing technical instruction and advice to colleagues, students and/or customers as required
• investigating and devising technical solutions to a range of practical problems to facilitate effective learning, teaching, and support services
• ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the BSRC including contribution to weekend, holiday and emergency cover rotas as required

Key areas of teaching responsibility will include:
• arranging/organising and develop materials for practical teaching as required
• liaising with Education staff to ensure co-ordination and smooth teaching delivery
• conducting student practical’s and assessments in accordance with Awarding Body and Regulatory Body standards
• providing constructive feedback to learners on their performance
• maintaining appropriate records of teaching and assessment
• managing, auditing and maintaining all stock and resources/equipment needed in the support of curriculum areas ensuring staff and students are able to utilise equipment as and when required
• attending Careers Evenings, College promotional events, local and national shows as required
