Dynamics Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you passionate about aerospace structures and dynamics, developing custom analysis code, and applying your skills to hardware testing?

If so, then we want you to join our team to help us evaluate and advance new technologies in the air and missile defense industry!

As a member of our Dynamics team in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering group, you will deliver independent technical direction to APL 's sponsors. We apply a multidisciplinary design and analysis approach, where you will collaborate with experts in aerodynamics, structures, thermal analysis, and other specializations. The dynamics section contributes to this process by creating code for classical first-principles dynamics & vibration, developing load conditions and aeroelastic stability evaluations for flight vehicles, and applying multi-physics analysis tools to the study of lethality.

There will be opportunities for collaboration with experts at peer organizations, as well as present findings and influence the development of new defense technology. Furthermore, internal funding channels empower staff to explore their own ideas and cultivate creativity.

Your primary responsibilities as a Dynamics Engineer/Analyst will be to...

  • Apply your knowledge in dynamics to present-day and future challenges in the aerospace and defense industry
  • Develop mathematical representations of physical systems using commercial simulation codes or first-principles methods
  • Participate in testing on-site and at government or contractor facilities, and analyze data from shock, vibration, and performance testing of aerospace hardware
  • Work with team members representing a diverse set of engineering fields

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor 's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Are proficient in programming in a scientific language, including MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • Are willing and able to work full-time based out of the APL campus in Laurel, MD. Telework may be available up to two days per week under certain conditions.
  • Are able to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Master 's or PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Have research and/or professional experience in dynamics
  • Are committed to applying good software engineering practices including using configuration management tools such as git, and writing effective documentation of your code
  • Have experience with one or more commercial finite element analysis, multi-body dynamics simulation, or multi-physics analysis software products, including Abaqus, SIMPACK, or similar
