About Austin Parks Foundation

Austin Parks Foundation (APF) is dedicated to partnering with our community to enhance people’s lives by making our public parks, trails and green spaces better through volunteerism, innovative programming, advocacy and financial support. A nonprofit established in 1992, APF fills the city’s funding and resource gap in order to develop, maintain and enhance the area’s nearly 300 parks, trails and green spaces.

Job Summary

APF’s VP of Development and Communications will serve as a critical member of the executive leadership team. In collaboration with the CEO, they will articulate and implement a strategic vision for the organization that focuses on effective growth, building new and maintaining existing partnerships to grow and sustain the organization.

The VP will oversee a portfolio that includes: 1) philanthropy 2.) communications; 3) high-level partnerships; and 4) special projects. They will also manage APF’s marketing and development teams and will assist with developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining strategic initiatives for these two organizational departments. They will also serve as a staff liaison to the Board of Directors, specifically the Development Committee, and will engage the Board frequently under the direction of the CEO.

Essential Functions

  • Guide the strategy and implementation of APF’s communication and marketing initiatives and ensure alignment with APF’s mission and core values.
  • Direct APF’s Development initiatives and specifically seek to markedly grow APF’s sustaining and initiative-based giving.
  • Oversee APF’s media, public relations and branding strategies.
  • Oversee the growth of grants, endowments, major donors and public/private partnerships.
  • Represent Austin Parks Foundation and build relationships with business partners, strategic donors, and other community groups.
  • Serve as a key media spokesperson and represent APF at public events.
  • Give presentations to the APF Board of Directors, staff and partners.
  • Cultivate relationships and develop new partnerships to expand funding for parks.
  • Responsible for budgeting and financial oversight for the development and marketing teams.
  • Hire, train, supervise and mentor a cohesive team of talented professionals.
  • Ensure APF’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within all programs and projects.
  • Oversee special projects and other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must be passionate about parks and the outdoors.
  • Must have at least 5 years of senior nonprofit leadership experience and demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team (and at least 10 years of total experience).
  • Must have excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, and be an excellent public speaker.
  • Must have a solid business acumen as well as exceptional strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a variety of audiences, including staff, volunteers, community leaders, funders, partner organizations, board members, city staff and city council members.
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and welcome new challenges regularly.
  • Must be committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors (required) or Masters (preferred) degree in relevant field.
  • Experience working in development. Also will consider experience in sales, marketing, and/or communications.

Physical Demand and Work Environment

  • Physical demands are minimal and typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations - may be required to move event materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Work environment is typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations - work is done largely in-office, with some exceptions for tabling, community meetings, and special events.
  • Required to work some evenings and weekends.

Salary Range Disclaimer

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience, certifications and credentials. The range listed is just one component of APF's total compensation package for employees.

Salary Range Transparency

$100,000-$120,000 USD per year
