Executive Director

Full Job Description

ABOUT THE MONTANA JUSTICE FOUNDATION
The Montana Justice Foundation (MJF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to effectively raise, manage, and distribute funding that increases access to the civil justice system throughout Montana. We raise funds through the Interest on Lawyer Trust Account (IOLTA) program, court-ordered awards, and contributions from Montana lawyers, law firms, and other private donors.

MJF makes grants to programs offering legal assistance to Montanans living on low incomes, helping people stay in housing, receive medical care, escape abusive and violent environments, and rebuild their lives. We also work with partners on the Access to Justice Commission – an entity created by the Montana State Supreme Court to remove barriers to justice – to help ensure a coordinated spectrum of legal aid resources across the state.

MJF is currently seeking an Executive Director to lead our team.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for the direction, management, execution, and evaluation of all MJF programs, campaigns, and activities.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In partnership with the Board of Directors and MJF staff, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall operations of MJF, including strategic planning, fiscal oversight, development, and program administration.

Specific job responsibilities include:

  • Administration of Montana’s Interest on Lawyers Trust Account (IOLTA) Program. The Executive Director is responsible for developing strong relationships with financial institutions to maintain and increase interest rates on IOLTA accounts. Working with the Program Assistant, the Executive Director ensures that administrative aspects of the program – including tracking bank remittances, responding to attorney and bank questions, and attorney compliance – are handled effectively.
  • Resource development. In collaboration with the Development Director, the Executive Director develops and implements strategies for achieving fundraising goals, including donor engagement, solicitation, and recognition, and the development of public presentations, proposals, and fundraising materials.
  • Grants management. The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to set priorities for MJF’s grant programs. The Executive Director develops and maintains relationships with grantees, oversees site visits, and provides technical assistance to grantees as needed.
  • Board development and volunteer engagement. The Executive Director works closely with board leadership to increase volunteer participation and support the board and its committees.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key constituents. The Executive Director keeps in touch with a wide range of key constituents, including the broader legal community, financial institutions, prospective funding agencies, individual donors, grantees, governmental agencies, and the media to increase support for access to justice issues.
  • Supervise and mentor one or more staff members, including a Program Assistant and Development Director (or other development staff).

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • A background with experience in volunteer engagement, resource development, communications, and external relations.
  • Proven ability to identify and secure funding from diverse sources.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including delivering presentations with exceptional attention to detail.
  • The ability to lead, collaborate or follow as needed. Able to serve as spokesperson and handle “behind the scenes” work.
  • Experience working with high-powered volunteers; comfortable relating to bench and bar leaders. Ability to plan, organize, and implement board education programs.
  • Experience both supervising and working collaboratively; able to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Creative thinker and problem solver.
  • Outgoing and excited to build relationships with partners.
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to advancing MJF’s mission to increase access to justice.
  • Knowledge of various aspects of access to justice issues and experience working with the legal community.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook) and social media platforms.
  • Able to develop and maintain record-keeping systems and procedures.
  • Nonprofit or legal experience preferred.

COMPENSATION
$80,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on skills and experience. Employment benefits include personal leave, fully paid health and dental insurance, and an employer participatory retirement account.

This is a full-time, exempt position based at MJF’s office in downtown Helena, MT. Remote working may be considered, but a preference will be given to those willing to work in Helena. Travel and some nights and weekends will be required and will likely increase after pandemic precautions are lifted.

Please submit a letter of interest and resume to hiring(@)mtjustice.org. All applications will be held in confidence.
