Director of Development
DESCRIPTION
Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, has been helping animals and people since 1873. Together with our community, we better the lives of animals through justice, prevention, and life-saving care. Our organization cares for thousands of animals each year—saving animals from abuse and suffering, sending homeless pets to new homes, connecting pet owners with resources to keep their pets, and sharing information on how to help animals every day.
The Director of Development directs Lollypop Farm’s donor engagement and fundraising programs. This position is a key steward of the organization’s culture of philanthropy that helps donors fulfill their passions and interests through their giving to Lollypop Farm. Collaborating across the organization and with the development team, the director maximizes annual contributed revenue from individual donors, corporations, foundations, and other entities by overseeing staff managing a wide variety of giving programs. The Director of Development applies the highest ethical standards to donor relations in alignment with Lollypop Farm’s mission, vision, and values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership
  • Manages, hires, trains, and evaluates donor relations and database analytics. Ensures a donor-centric fundraising approach through coaching and professional development
  • Coaches and mentors staff toward achieving goals and professional growth
  • Through assessment and coaching, builds a succession and development plan for each position reporting in to the Director
  • Stays current on fundraising trends through continuing education, associations, and forums on development and the animal welfare industry. Advises VP of Development & Communications about opportunities or challenges
  • Works across the organization to develop a culture of philanthropy within Lollypop Farm
  • Works to increase team knowledge and practice of diversity, equity & inclusion
  • Adheres to the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethics and Donor Bill of Rights
  • Influences and enforces organization policies and strategy with team members
  • Serves on and guides the Development Committee of the Board of Directors
  • Actively participates in animal welfare industry networks and AFPGV and advises Vice President of Development & Communications about opportunities or challenges
Development and Donor Relations
  • In consultation with the supervisor, develops, establishes goals for, and executes fundraising strategies together with the development team
  • Oversees all aspects of development programs including direct mail, grants, planned gifts, honor/memorial giving, monthly giving, mid-level giving, and major giving with a focus on the team progressing donors upwards
  • Ensures timely and accurate donor acknowledgments and customer service
  • Manages a caseload of major-level donors to support annual fund and capital campaign goals
  • Ensures all communications align with the Lollypop Farm brand, mission, and vision. Edits and writes copy as needed
  • Oversees the planning and execution of donor stewardship events. Collaborates with the Director of Communications & Events on donor engagement and event support. Attends and supports stewardship and fundraising events.
  • Helps represent Lollypop Farm at public events and networking opportunities.
Financial, Records Management, and Other Responsibilities
  • Responsible for accurate and consistent donor records. Ensures accurate and timely communications and required reports to and from team members
  • Assesses and measures the need for additional department support during busy times or projecting future needs
  • Prepares annual development income and expense budget. Partners with program staff to build budgets that are integral to the success of fundraising efforts
  • Proposes and manages vendors, consultants, and systems to support quality and cost-effective activities
  • Monitors and reports on income and expenses. Adheres to all finance and accounting procedures and requirements
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and assures compliance with legal, tax, and government requirements and reporting, working closely with the Finance team
  • Maintains appropriate files and records in adherence to retention policies and procedures
  • Documents and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring consistency and accuracy
  • Observes all safety rules and regulations for self and others
  • Performs other duties as requested to meet organization needs
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is strongly preferred. CRFE preferred.
Experience/Personal Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of successful fundraising experience required.
  • Three or more years of management experience required.
  • Budget experience required.
Skills:
  • Excellence in both verbal and written communications, both in person and by phone, and with exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude and interest in data analytics for donor management
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple and demands
  • Motivated and disciplined in setting and achieving goals
  • Proficient in using the most recent versions of computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, database management (Raiser’s Edge preferred), and presentation software
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands while achieving work goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a professional demeanor, self-reliance, and resourcefulness
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed
Physical Demands
Performs work primarily in an office setting, occasionally works outdoors and in other event spaces. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, feel, speak, hear, and see. Performance may also require prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion.
