Description

The Director of Financial Aid is responsible for the development and coordination of the administration of comprehensive financial aid services which includes, but is not limited to the administration of federal and state grants, veterans’ benefits, work-study program, institutional/private grants, scholarships and loans. This is highly responsible managerial work involving policy formulation and implementation, and fiscal management of comprehensive programs related to Financial Aid and Student Service functions. This position requires technical knowledge pertaining to federal, state, institutional and private programs, and regulations; significant interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to interact with a wide range of students and professionals. This position is responsible for proactively addressing and servicing students’ financial aid needs in addition to ensuring effective, efficient and student-friendly processes and operations are in place. The Director of Financial Aid is charged with administering these duties with integrity and in accordance with federal and state regulations and with the objective of minimizing risk to the institution.

Examples of Duties

  • Administer a comprehensive student financial aid program in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Administer the Veterans Affairs Program for all student veterans.
  • Work with the Department of Education on Program Participation Agreements and Eligibility and Certification Approval Reports.
  • Collect, process and analyze data from student applications and determine the students’ eligibility for financial assistance.
  • Counsel students to help them meet their financial obligations utilizing various financial aid and other funding resources while considering their financial need and situation.
  • Determine financial aid packages, to include appropriate scholarship funding, for students according to federal, state and institutional guidelines.
  • Inform students of aid related information, documenting all aid assigned and maintain procedures and processes related to this.
  • Prepare reports, including fund requests, expenditure status, and progress reports to federal and state agencies, private entities and appropriate college personnel.
  • Maintain proficiency and current knowledge on developments in student financial aid matters.
  • Submit disbursement information to the business office, check output records and maintain financial aid records to insure accurate and timely processing.
  • Inform local secondary schools of financial aid availability and procedures to promote a conducive relationship with the schools.
  • Provide and receive information to and from financial aid offices of other institutions of higher education.
  • Provide necessary information to other staff members to promote the accomplishment of the objectives of the Student Services area.
  • Oversee the Workstudy programs providing the necessary information for the appropriate staff members.
  • Manage efforts to maintain a low student loan default rate, which includes monitoring and entrance and exit loan counseling.
  • Award state, institutional, foundation and institutional scholarships, which includes chairing the LCC Scholarship Committee and working closely with the LCC Foundation and Admissions Office.
  • Be responsible for supervision, evaluation of financial aid staff and oversight of office staff development as needs are identified.
  • Provide financial aid counseling and outreach programs to student and families.
  • Occasional travel for liaison and professional development activities with high school counselors, parents, and students
  • Develop and offer a variety of student training and workshops on all aspects of paying for college.
  • Monitor and update the financial aid web pages.
  • Develop and maintain the LCC Financial Aid Handbook.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, such as Education or Business Administration is required. Master's degree is desirable in a field such as Student Personnel or Business Administration.
  • A minimum of two years of management and supervisory experience in Financial Aid, or a similar field (i.e., banking/ finance, Veterans’ Affairs, records management, etc.) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to a diverse community, e.g., students, external agencies, professional and support staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in capacities requiring analytical/technical competencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in computer applications and systems with the ability to learn new systems such as Department of Education software, Department of Veteran Affairs software.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Progressive financial aid experience in higher education preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal Title IV programs and regulations preferred.
  • Student information systems software experience; Banner experience is preferred.
