YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Nature Conservancy is committed to taking a more impactful approach to respond to the challenge of global climate change. To advance our mission, TNC will work in Florida and across the nation to accelerate both climate mitigation and adaptation approaches.

The Climate Strategy Director (“Director”) will advance The Nature Conservancy’s energy and climate goals through collaboration, effective communication, and by building strategic partnerships designed to broaden support in Florida for action to further our strategies on climate. The Director works with other TNC Operating Units and Regions, research organizations, governments, business sector, community organizations, and other NGOs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director will lead efforts in Florida in support of TNC’s climate and renewable energy priorities. They will work closely with TNC staff, outside consultants, collaborators, inter-governmental organizations, and the corporate community to identify opportunities and develop strategies and alliances to build the enabling environment that will allow progress toward and implementation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in an equitable way. They serve as liaison and informational contact between The Nature Conservancy, partner organizations, federal, state, and local government officials, and business groups in order to advance climate mitigation and clean energy solutions. They participate in fundraising activities to increase financial support for the TNC climate strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

Working closely with the Director of Strategy and Policy, the Climate Strategy Team, and the Government Relations Team:

  • Leads the Chapter’s Inspiring Climate Action Strategy to broaden support for action on TNC’s climate and renewable energy priorities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. decarbonization, expanding clean energy, energy efficiency, sequestration, etc.)
  • Leads the implementation of projects that deliver towards the goals of the Chapter’s Inspiring Climate Action Strategy.
  • Makes strategic decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
  • Make strategic decisions about where and when to invest in on the ground practice to influence large scale change.
  • Strengthens TNC’s role as an effective, credible partner on energy and climate solutions.
  • Develop climate and energy strategies that support communities and improve well-being.
  • Identifies key stakeholders and constituencies and develops and implements strategies to engage these individuals and audiences in collaborative action on climate and energy policy and priorities.
  • Collaborates with the other strategy directors on climate related work.
  • Ensures dimensions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice is incorporated into the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects within the Climate Strategy.
  • Aligns Chapter strategies with those of the North American Region’s Climate Strategy, the Global Climate Team, and with other Business Units with parallel approaches.
  • Collaborates with and reports on the Florida Chapter’s efforts and progress on strategies to the TNC North American Region.
  • Convenes intergovernmental working groups on climate, including regional climate collaboratives.
  • Creates new and strengthens existing partnerships with other organizations in the non-profit and private sectors, including conservation, corporate and recreation sectors.
  • Oversees contracts and directs consultants for research and analysis (e.g., exploring policy options, polling/messaging/public opinion) to achieve climate and energy goals.
  • Convenes and facilitates internal and external meetings to deepen understanding of climate change impacts, expand support for climate action and to advance solutions.
  • Coordinates use of media (e.g. earned, paid, social) in support of climate action and TNC’s climate and energy policy priorities.
  • Articulates strategies addressing climate change for Marketing and Philanthropy colleagues and materials.
  • Utilizing a portfolio management approach, manages the suite of projects under the Inspiring Climate Action Strategy towards the outcomes of the strategy, including budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Tracks climate science and policy developments relevant to Chapter strategies and opportunities for expanding climate and renewable energy work
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements, as well as lobbying laws and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
  • Experience negotiating.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
  • Experience working with corporate or NGO partners, and government agencies.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with business, government, or legislative staff and/or program leadership.
  • Experience working across race, socio-economic class and language differences appreciated.
  • Strong commitment to incorporating dimensions of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in conservation strategy and practice.
  • Familiarity with social, economic, and political conditions in Florida.
  • Experience building networks or organizational capacity, facilitating informational sessions, increasing internal knowledge and capacity, and identifying key stakeholders.
  • Experience building relationships to influence outcomes.
  • Experience or understanding of corporate partnerships or corporate sustainability principles.
  • Ability to develop practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives or related field.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Ability to deliver speeches and presentations that are informative and persuasive.
  • Politically savvy.
