Job Description

The Modern Language Centre (MLC) seeks to employ a Lecturer in Greek and Latin Language (Education) to deliver degree level courses within the UG and PG programmes offered by the Classics department. You will be an experienced, talented, and creative teacher of Ancient Greek and Latin languages and texts across a range of periods and genres. You will be dedicated to the promotion of ancient languages with a proven track record in language teaching. Your current research profile in Ancient Greek and/or Latin literature will enhance and inform your pedagogy. Ability to teach languages of the ancient West and South Asia (such as Classical Persian, Hittite and Sumerian etc.) would be an advantage.

This is a permanent Education post with a full-time contract from September 2022.

The Department of Classics at King’s College London is one of the largest Classics Departments in the UK, with expertise in areas from the Aegean Bronze Age and the Ancient Near East to Modern Greek literature and the Reception of the Classical World. The Department is a well-known centre for the study of Ancient Greek and Latin literature and in the recent QS World University Rankings 2022 came 12th globally and 3rd in the UK in teaching Classics. In REF 2021 the Department was ranked First equal on the grade point average of our overall quality profile.

Key responsibilities

• Convene and teach the module ‘Beginners’ Latin’ (4AACLA01)
• Convene and teach the module ‘Beginners’ Ancient Greek’ (4AACGK01)
• Convene and teach Greek & Latin Text modules at all levels (Level 4 to Level 7)
• Support the Language Director in the effective running of all teaching and assessment activities, course development, events and programmes relating to Greek and Latin modules.
• Supervise BA and MA dissertations in Latin literature, Greek Literature, and modern receptions of ancient Greek & Roman culture
• Participate in assessment and other educational activities as needed
• Act as personal tutor and support students in accordance with Departmental, Faculty and College practice and guidelines
• Undertake academic-administrative role(s) in the Department of Classics, as required by the Head of Department
• Collaborate with other members of the Department of Classics, the MLC and of the wider College community in all aspects of the job, endeavouring to create an inclusive and supportive environment.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria:

1. Completion of PhD or equivalent in Ancient Greek and/or Latin Literature or a closely related area
2. Outstanding competence and teaching experience in Ancient Greek and Latin language
3. Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature across the undergraduate curriculum
4. Knowledge and understanding of digital (online and technology-enhanced/blended) education
5. Strong track record in scholarship achievement relative to career stage in Ancient Greek and/or Latin literature
6. A high standard of administrative and organizational skills

Desirable criteria:

1. Ability to teach languages of the ancient West and South Asia (such as Classical Persian, Hittite and Sumerian etc.)
2. Experience of teaching and supporting students at Postgraduate level
3. Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice.
