Job Description

The Opportunity

This is a wonderful opportunity to lead a well-respected, anchor, community-based organization with the distinction of serving the entire state of Delaware. With a rich history of service to the community, the CEO will partner with a dedicated board and committed staff to provide enriching programs and services to this dynamic service area.

Our Mission

To empower youth, foster healthy living, and promote strong communities.

Our Vision

A healthy, inclusive community where all people reach their full potential.

To strengthen the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We do this by welcoming, connecting, supporting, and inviting all to join our YMCA family. Our team is Welcoming, Genuine, Hopeful, Nurturing and Determined to achieve the goals in our community-developed Strategic Plan.

The YMCA of Delaware has been a community anchor since 1891. Over our history, the YMCA has brought lasting personal and social change, which it delivers through programs at 8 branches, two outdoor facilities and an overnight camp. Over the next 2 years the YMCA will complete construction of a new 56,000 sq ft facility in Middletown, Delaware and prepare for a new facility in Sussex County, Delaware.

YMCA of Delaware Core Values

Caring | Honesty | Respect | Responsibility

These shared beliefs and principles guide our behavior, interactions with each other and decision-making. We promise to engage and operate in ways that exemplify these values.

THE YMCA IS FOR ALL

The YMCA of Delaware strives to be a diverse and inclusive organization open to all. We are guided by our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in everything we do, and this is highlighted when we welcome all people regardless of ability, age, background, ethnicity/race, faith, gender identity or sexual orientation. The Y believes that, in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all and when everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Our Focus

For Youth Development - Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

For Healthy Living - Improving physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being

For Social Responsibility - Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

At the YMCA, we measure the success of our cause by how well we engage communities in these three areas of focus. From water safety to disease prevention, youth literacy to college readiness, safe, inclusive spaces to welcoming newcomers, everything our YMCA does is in service to making our communities better.

YMCA of Delaware Association Facts

The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Deeply rooted in the local community since 1891, the YMCA of Delaware engages individuals and families through programs, services, and events across 8 branches, 2 outdoor centers, an overnight camp, and retreats center. A trusted community partner for over one hundred years, the YMCA of Delaware has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

The YMCA of Delaware is in one of the best states in the country with a great quality of life which includes: living at the beach or perhaps a short drive to the beaches, Pocono mountains, major cities like Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. as well as great neighborhoods to live in, cultural events, home of “Tax Free” shopping, and many other wonderful attractions throughout the state. Delaware is the 15th most diverse state in the USA.

As the only statewide YMCA, we are the largest provider of health and wellness services, childcare, youth sports and swim lessons. Our service area includes the entire state of Delaware with three counties: New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. In addition to our eight more traditional health and wellness branches across the state, we offer two outdoor facilities and a 300-acre overnight camp and retreats center, Camp Tockwogh, located on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay in Worton, Maryland.

We also offer an adult-focused housing facility in the downtown Wilmington location, referred to as the Central branch. The Residence at the Central YMCA includes 180 SOR bedroom units (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit-LIHTC) providing housing to men 18 years and older. The residents are provided with a dorm-style room, discounted rates to use the fitness center, and access to various health and human service providers who partner with the YMCA.

The construction of a new 56,000 square foot facility in the rapidly growing community of Middletown, Delaware has just begun! This project, which would not be possible without the significant support from the town of Middletown and the State of Delaware, will have the power to fuel economic development, improve community health outcomes, empower youth, and bring people from all walks of life together.

The Sussex location in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is currently leased from the local school district and the Y consistently invests in the current building and property to sustain the operation. Recently an MOU has been signed for a 5.6-acre site approximately 9.5 miles from the current location. It is estimated to take 2-3 years for project approval followed by a formal agreement and fundraising. This new site has the potential to bring in 3,000-4,000 new members.

The YMCA of Delaware website (www.ymcade.org) offers a view into the breadth of programming and services available to our communities.

The Y anticipates serving 15,000 individuals annually in Middletown through membership, community-based programs, before and after school enrichment, youth sports and summer camp. The YMCA’s academic enrichment and college readiness programs will prepare teens to become competent and successful adults, and pre-teen and teen mentorship programs will support substance abuse prevention. In addition, the Y will bring three hundred new, local jobs to the Middletown area, providing a workforce development pathway for many first-time job seekers.

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That is why childcare and early learning programs at the Y focus on holistically nurturing child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn fundamental skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-esteem through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

At our day camps participants sing songs, create arts and crafts, play music, swim, learn academic fundamentals, participate in storytelling and more. During our specialty camps we focus on STEM, sports, dance, art, cooking and more. Our day camps are offered at various locations across the state: Bear-Glasgow; Brandywine YMCA; Dover YMCA; Sussex YMCA; Walnut Street YMCA; Western YMCA; Middletown YMCA.

Our overnight camp and retreats center, Camp Tockwogh, is a spectacular rural camp on 310 well-preserved acres spread over a mile and half along the Chesapeake Bay in Worton, MD. Serving over 2,000 campers annually, it provides a unique opportunity for campers to enjoy the great outdoors and new experiences including sailing, horseback riding, hiking and more. Our camping options include opportunities for groups, families, and children from kindergarten through 11th grade.

We are proud to participate in SFSP & CACFP food programs at most of our childcare and campsites. Thanks to these programs, thousands of children attending Y Summer Camp and Child Care programs have access to free, nutritious meals each year.

All locations offer financial assistance and discounted programs based on need.

Programs and offerings vary by location and include, but are not limited to:

  • Active Older Adults
  • Afterschool, Preschool

Financial

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the YMCA of Delaware on multiple levels. While we did benefit from some of the Federal funding programs, there remains challenges in the operations and the financial state of the organization. COVID-19 continues to provide uncertainty even as restrictions are lifted but we feel that we are making forward progress. Our cash position is strong because of improving operations and government support. As of 3/31/22 we had $15 million in unrestricted operating cash and cash equivalents, $7.8 million of perpetual trusts, $1.2 million in internally restricted cash, and $8.54 million in undesignated marketable securities. Designated endowments total $6.7 million at 3/31/2022. Bonds payable at 3/31/22 were $14.8 million.
