Job Description


The College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees is seeking confidential nominations and expressions of interest for the College's next president. The successful candidate will be a visionary and a humanistic and compassionate leader who is passionate about leading a student-centered institution and ensuring student equity and success.

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a public, regional community college with a far-reaching goal to help students and the community meet the challenges of individual, social, and global changes. Today the College serves the tri-county area that includes Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's counties. CSM operates four campuses in the tri-county area and served 14,188 students during the academic year 2020-2021.

College of Southern Maryland is known as a progressive, innovative, and technologically advanced institution. CSM prides itself on delivering high quality educational services and its role as a catalyst for business, industry, and government to identify the resources needed to grow and maintain a healthy economy and community.

The College organized its academic units into three learning divisions.
Students are able to choose from more than 100 quality academic programs including an expanding array of associate degrees, certificates, and letters of recognition. The College prepares its students for transfer to bachelor's degree programs and provides the tools and resources needed to immediately succeed in a competitive marketplace.

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, CSM's next President
will build on the accomplishments of President Maureen Murphy, who will retire on December 31, 2022. Some of the key strategic priorities include:

  • Developing strategies and initiatives to reverse the enrollment decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to increase the rate of retention of current students while simultaneously maintaining and ensuring the financial health and stability of the College, will be a major priority for the next president.
  • CSM enrolls approximately 60 percent of the high school graduates in Southern Maryland, and dual enrollment was one of the fastest areas of enrollment growth making up 7.2% of fall 2021 enrollments. The new president will continue to explore increasing early college partnership activities across all school districts.
  • CSM is deeply committed to student equity and success and is proud to be an Achieving the Dream College (ATD). The next president will ensure that the College maintains and continues to demonstrate its commitment to equity in every area of the College and continues the progress made as an ATD school.
