Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the national umbrella organization for the nation’s leading network of women’s health care providers, educators, and advocates, serving women, men, teens and families. For over 100 years, Planned Parenthood has done more than any other organization in the United States to improve women’s health and safety, prevent unintended pregnancies, and advance the right and ability of individuals and families to make informed and responsible health care decisions. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) is the advocacy and political arm of PPFA.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) seeks a Vice President, Development, Principal and Major Gifts . This job reports to the Chief Development Officer in the Development Division of PPFA.

Purpose:
The Vice President (VP), Principal and Major Gifts (PMG) leads the work of the PMG team to raise the necessary revenue to execute the strategic priorities of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF), Planned Parenthood Votes (PPVotes), and the Planned Parenthood Federal PAC (PPFedPAC). The PMG portfolio is composed of high-net-worth individual donors and families capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more with an emphasis on relationship building to grow gifts and pledges to six, seven, and eight-figure gifts. As a member of the Senior Development Leadership Team (SDLT), the VP, PMG has a deep personal commitment to, and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and uses that as a frame to lead PMG and influence the direction of the division overall.

Delivery
Provide world-class leadership to a team of 30+ fundraising professionals to raise annual and multi-year major and principal level gifts from high-net-worth individuals and families in support of the work of PPFA, PPAF, PPVotes, and the PPFedPAC, totaling close to $80 million annually.
Set strategic direction for fundraising plans for principal and major gifts, including:
  • Ongoing evaluation of team structure to ensure adequate staffing resources to grow revenue and relationships with high-net-worth donors and prospects. Continuous career development of staff to maintain opportunity pipelines for promising talent.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in processes and procedures to set budgets, forecast revenue against budget targets, and in ongoing pipeline development and monitoring.
  • Expand the number of diverse donors in the principal and major gift portfolio.
  • Oversee the ongoing stewardship of major and principal donors including Leadership Council programming, special Campaign recognition programs, Leadership Briefing calls, and other projects.
  • Ensure political fundraising plans are in compliance with state and federal election laws.
Create a learning environment for staff that prioritizes professional development and growth within the parameters of business needs. Promote a staff culture of feedback and accountability, model multi-directional feedback, and uplift work-life balance, safety, healing, and wellness in working relationships.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain staff from diverse backgrounds that will enhance PPFA’s ability to attract donors. Recruit, mentor, and manage staff fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and commitment to organizational values which include equity, justice, and anti-racism principles, by setting and modeling effective leadership practices, providing regular feedback, and supporting career development opportunities.
  • Align structure to help support team members’ understanding of how their individual roles, roles of their teams, and the overall PMG team contribute to the success of PPFA’s development efforts.
  • Serve as a role model for accountability with regard to team agreements.
Partner with Senior Development Leadership Team (SDLT) members to successfully plan and execute a capital campaign to fund organizational priorities.
  • Work with frontline PMG fundraisers to develop a robust pipeline of donor prospects capable of making philanthropic investments at the $1 million+ level.
Serve as a thought-leader for Planned Parenthood’s development program at the national office and 49 affiliates, including active participation with the Development Officers Council (DOC) affiliate membership organization.
Expand the PMG partnership with 8 affiliates in the Collaborative Fundraising Program (CFP), focusing on collaboration among PPFA frontline fundraising team members and CFP affiliate frontline team members to establish donor strategies that will yield maximum revenue and deepen the relationship between the donor and the Planned Parenthood movement.

Engagement:
This position interacts with internal and external leaders and must have exceptional leadership and influencing skills. The Principal and Major Gifts team includes more than 30 staff members organized among a frontline fundraising team, a political fundraising team, and an operations team. Other constituents include PMG donors and prospects; PPFA/PPAF senior leaders; Planned Parenthood affiliate CEOs and CDOs; and PPFA, PPAF, and affiliate board members.
PMG team staff members are based in the New York City, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco offices, as well as telecommuters.

Experience
  • Successful track record of personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gifts from individual and institutional donors at the level of six to seven-figures and greater. Strength in prospect discovery and in building effective strategies to compel new major donor investment.
  • Substantial management experience and demonstrated ability to establish, lead, and drive objectives – particularly in a highly dynamic and evolving environment – while operationalizing equity and setting an equity and justice-rooted strategy for advancement.
  • Proven ability to work with multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-gendered, intergenerational teams and workforces. Significant experience leading a team that centers inclusivity and consensus or other participatory decision-making models. Familiarity with Black Feminist Praxis framework a plus.
  • Experience fundraising for advocacy/electoral priorities and in a rapid response environment.
  • Experience navigating challenging donor conversations.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with senior-level colleagues, board members, and leadership volunteers on successful development-related activities.
  • Experience working in a federated/networked organization.

Starting salary: $235K
