Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Instruction:

Provide comprehensive counseling services including academic, career and vocational, personal and transfer planning to current and prospective students and student-athletes. Teach counseling classes (an emphasis for position(s)), including developing and providing curriculum that promotes student success. Assist students in gaining educational and career related information in achieving their immediate and long range academic and occupational goals. Use available technologies and assessment instruments with the ability to provide effective interpretation to students. Establish and maintain liaison activities with academic departments, administrative offices, student services offices, high school counselors, students, parents and the general public and to do related outreach and work, as required. Interact with a diverse student, staff and faculty population and demonstrate experience in the use of cross-cultural counseling skills. Position will provide focused engagement for student athletes, outreach and educational planning, those undecided in major/educational goal, and those on probation, not making satisfactory academic progress (financial aid) or otherwise subject to the college's early alert program.

ONLINE INSTRUCTION/COUNSELING

All counselors must be available to provide counseling services and instruction in person. Please note that the College does not offer online-only teaching or counseling assignments.

Essential Functions

ACADEMIC AND EDUCATIONAL PLANNING
Assess study skills and career goals. Determine students' academic needs and based on those results, assist students in developing educational plans for transfer, graduation and certificate requirements. Provide individual student appointments, workshops and group guidance courses. Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation processes. Complete formal and informal requests for evaluation of credit. Provide early alert and follow up intervention for students facing probation and disqualification or otherwise identified as at risk. Peripheral: refer students to other District and/or external support services for assistance, as appropriate to meet student needs.

INSTRUCTION
Teach Counseling classes, lead workshops and seminars, including developing and providing curriculum for student success, presenting lectures and lessons, maintaining records of students' grades and attendance and review of current and appropriate texts. Assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula (including courses that serve community needs, such as short-term, non-credit or online courses).

CAREER AND VOCATIONAL COUNSELING AND DEVELOPMENT
Assess and assist the whole student, including cultural differences and/or disabling conditions. Provide comprehensive career counseling for the assessment of career and life planning skills such as interests, abilities and values involving the decision-making process. Provide assistance to academic and career technical students in making sound educational and career decisions through outreach activities such as classroom presentations. Conduct major, career and job exploration sessions to assist students with career decisions. Work closely with the other members of the Counseling faculty and staff and the Career and Transfer Center to implement career services for the College. Administer and interpret various career assessment tools. Peripheral: Provide students with job seeking skills and strategies as appropriate.

PERSONAL COUNSELING
Provide counseling as needed to assist students dealing with personal issues that could interfere with their success in college. Peripheral: Provide referrals for students to college and external community mental health services and/or other assistance agencies appropriate for the student needs.

Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet one of the following two sets of requirements:

SET ONE
1.) A Master's degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development OR a California Community College Counselor Credential; OR the equivalent; AND

2.) A minimum of one (1) year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) demonstrated competence in professional counseling principles, practice and techniques for academic, career, transfer and vocational counseling in a higher education setting within the last five (5) years; AND

3.) Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

-OR-

SET TWO
1.) A Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development AND a valid California license as a Marriage, Family and Child therapist; OR the equivalent;

AND

2.) A minimum of two (2) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) demonstrated competence in professional counseling principles, practice and techniques for academic, career, transfer and vocational counseling in a California Community College within the last five (5) years; AND

3.) Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
College of Marin seeks candidates with successfully demonstrated educational counseling experience in the following areas:

  • Recent (within three years) successful academic counseling experience in a community college setting, and/or demonstrated awareness and commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the California community colleges including Student Success and Support Program and Student Equity initiatives;
  • Experience counseling athletes in a community college setting;
  • Knowledge of athletic requirements to comply with CCCAA, NCAA, NAIA and District rules and regulations as they relate to student athletes and transfer to Division I, Division II and Division III colleges and universities;
  • Vision and energy to plan and organize programs to enhance student success;
  • Ability to speak another language fluently, preferably Spanish;
  • Ability to work with students who have a broad range of academic skills, language abilities, motivation and educational / occupational goals as well as work with students with an undetermined major and setting educational goals;
  • Providing services to multi-ethnic, underrepresented and first generation college students;
  • Providing information on credit and non-credit programs;
  • Working with students on probation or on dismissal status;
  • Clear understanding of state-mandated matriculation policies, procedures and regulations, transfer requirements and graduation requirements;
  • Experience in all aspects of community college counseling, including academic, vocational, personal, career, and transfer;
  • Excellence in teaching personal development, counseling, and other related areas;
  • Ability to develop curriculum or services that stress innovation and multicultural emphasis;
  • Knowledge, training and experience with online pedagogy and technology;
  • Prior experience as a team member on department committees, campus-wide committees, and other campus organizations in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities;
  • Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, a student tracking system, a communication network and with counseling and articulation activities;
  • Willingness to work flexible hours to include evenings, weekends, and service to two campuses (Kentfield and Indian Valley).


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. COVID-19 Vaccination Status: All employees new to the District who access campuses or other District facilities, and/or participate in off-site work in-person for the District, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, prior to employment unless approved as exempt due to verified medical or religious reasons (as defined in federal or state laws and regulations).
  4. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  5. Certificated candidates who have not previously been employed in an academic position in California will be required to provide a medical certificate from a licensed physician showing that the candidate is free from any communicable disease unfitting the candidate to instruct or associate with students. The medical exam shall have been conducted not more than six months before submission of the certificate and shall be at the expense of the candidate. (Ed. Code Section 87408.6)
  6. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. Supplemental & Salary Information

BARGAINING UNIT & RETIREMENT PLAN

UPM – Full-time Faculty:
Counselors in this position classification are considered faculty and are represented by the United Professors of Marin (UPM/AFT 1610). Faculty members are required to comply fully with the United Professors of Marin Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues or charitable contributions. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. Full-time UPM employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Exempt

Counselors are placed on the Faculty Salary Schedule. Please refer to the United Professors of Marin (UPM/AFT) salary schedule our Human Resources web site for salary schedules. Step 14 is the highest entering step for permanent teachers new to the District. Salary placement is non-negotiable and is dependent upon verified background and experience.
