PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Director of Nursing programs directs the Associate Degree Nursing, Licenses Practical Nursing, and Nursing Assistant Programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Plans and implements nursing programs.

2. Develops and evaluates program outcomes in conjunction with faculty.

3. Oversees curriculum development and updates.

4. Coordinates related activities and maintains smooth operations.

5. Oversees the procurement and evaluation of clinical sites for the nursing and nursing assistant programs. Oversees the procurement and maintenance of clinical affiliation agreements.

6. Oversees simulation lab use including scheduling.

7. Develops and monitors program budgets and expenditures.

8. Develops an annual instructional schedule for nursing.

9. Provides information and data to external agencies.

10. Responsible for adherence to federal and state laws governing nursing education.

11. Responsible for the timely and accurate submission of all nursing-related documents to external regulatory and accrediting agencies.

12. Responsible for accreditation self-study document preparation and site visits.

13. Assists in student recruitment, retention, advising, orientation, and registration.

14. Oversees the nursing student admission approval process through the selection of new applicants.

15. Oversees nursing student progress and performance issues.

16. Conducts health-related needs assessments and student follow-up studies.

17. Works with various agencies in developing health education programs.

18. Serves on College advisory and governance committees.

19. Assists in maintaining an effective student advisory system.

20. Serves as a nursing faculty member in both the classroom and clinical settings, on an as-needed basis.

21. Participates in professional associations.

22. Performs supervisory responsibilities including evaluation of staff and faculty assigned to the nursing department.

23. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs supervisory responsibilities in accordance with federal and state employment law, college policies and procedures, the supervisor handbook, and relevant collective bargaining unit agreements with regard to recruitment and selection, timely review and approval of timesheets, assigning workload and projects, performance evaluation, discipline, communication, departmental leadership and day-to-day supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A Master’s degree or higher with a major in nursing is required.

2. Two years of clinical nursing practice and two years of teaching experience in an accredited nursing education program are required.

3. A current and valid Illinois Registered Nursing license is required.

4. Knowledge and skills in nursing and nursing education is required.

5. Practical health care field experience, administrative experience, and community college experience preferred.

6. Administrative experience, preferably in an institution of higher education, is preferred.

7. Excellent management and leadership skills are required.

8. Must possess organizational abilities and superior interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

9. Ability to manage, lead and influence diverse dynamic student population and staff is preferred.

10. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs is preferred.

11. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and write routine correspondence is preferred. Ability to speak effectively before groups are preferred.

12. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form is preferred.

13. Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; deal with conflict appropriately; withstand pressure and remain calm in tense situations, accurate; flexible; dependable; responsible; promotes teamwork; demonstrate a positive attitude is preferred.

Physical demands for this position include the ability to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, talk, and hear. This position requires limited standing, walking, reaching, and stooping/kneeling. Vision requirements for this position include close vision including the ability to view the text from a computer monitor. This position requires some driving, the majority of which is within the College district. This position is considered a Category 1 employee with potential risk for contact with Bloodborne pathogens and other risks associated with patient health care.

The work environment for this position includes a typical office environment with no extremes in temperature or noise.
