Job description

The Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences and Sackler Institute of Translational Research is seeking to recruit a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in clinical psychology. The post holder will undertake research, teaching and clinical work in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). They will be attached (50%) to Neurodevelopmental Pathway - specialist service for adults with neurodevelopmental outcomes, including specialist assessment, treatment, training to other staff, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.

The new post is an exciting opportunity for a clinical psychologist with an established teaching and research profile (Senior Lecturer) or with the clear potential (Lecturer/Researcher). There will also be opportunities to link to our new MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders, and other departments across the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience.

The post holder will act as Assistant Programme Director on the Department’s MSc Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences. In this role they will oversee the development and running of the MSc in Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences (CNS). The successful candidate will develop novel ‘translational’ research of relevance to neurodevelopment (broadly defined). This may be in any disorder with a clear neurodevelopment basis (e.g autism, ADHD, or psychosis), or in disorders that are commonly co-morbid. The research may be basic, clinical or applied; and it may focus on affected individuals, infants/children at risk of disorder, or parental risk factors. There will be opportunities to supervise and train post graduate students and postdoctoral research staff to ensure their effective development.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is full time post.

Key responsibilities

Senior Lecturer

  • To assist the Programme Director in leading our Masters programme in Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences (CNS), including overall management of teaching and clinical placements, clinical and academic tutors and maintaining oversight of the various course components.
  • Develop proposals for high-quality research activity in translational studies (e.g. clinical trials) in neurodevelopment through a portfolio of independent, as Principal Investigator, joint and/or network research projects and to acquire grant funding for the same through project grants, fellowships, studentship funding, consultancy and other additional funds. It is anticipated that the successful applicant would acquire/help acquire (as a PI or co-applicant) research funding totalling not less than £300,000 within the first 5 years. Significant support will be given by the department to help achieve this goal.
  • The post-holder will have the unique opportunity to link in with a number of projects. For example, some of our current projects investigating infant brain development; its association with variation in cognitive and behavioural phenotype, and factors that modulate ‘risk’ vs ‘resilience’ in infants who are at high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. autism and/or ADHD). There are also other opportunities to link to ongoing work funded by major EU, MRC, NIH and Wellcome Trust grants in both children and adults examining offending behaviour, psychopathy, inhibitory behaviour, ADHD, OCD, risk for psychosis, and autism. This work is ‘back translated’ to animal and cellular models via our newly funded MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental disorders, and ‘forward translated’ to proof of concept and clinical studies via collaborations with the Centre for Developing Brain and the Sackler Institute. ‘Pump priming’ funds will be available from the Sackler Institute to help the successful candidate launch their research work.
  • Maintain a record of publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals, previous grant funding and to have led an independent research team.
  • Enhance the research profile and record of the Department and School by maintaining a consistent high-level output of publications in quality peer reviewed scientific journals and presentations of world-class quality.
  • Lead a research team to develop their own research interests, and by establishing a network of collaborations with other researchers linking research themes of the department, The Sackler Institute of Translational Neurodevelopment and the new MRC Centre of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

  • Supervise and train postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff to ensure their effective development and to provide mentorship to more junior academic staff.
  • Contribute to all the formal and informal programmes of educational activity offered by their department.
  • The postholder will be expected to have good social and management skills as the role requires liaising between students, other teaching staff and external experts. Given this is a niche course which attracts high-quality students from a range of disciplines and nationalities, the post holder will be expected to be sympathetic to and understand diverse approaches and cultures while at the same time being aware of the other demands experienced by academic and clinical supervisors.
  • Serve within the host department as directed by the Head of Department and required by the College’s academic framework.
