Full Job Description

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (“GSEMA”) seeks a Director of Leadership Giving to join the Fund Development team.

Working closely with and reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Leadership Giving will manage the major gifts program for GSEMA. As part of the Fund Development senior leadership, the Director will actively participate in developing strategy, planning, budgeting, implementing, and assessing the success of the GSEMA’s fundraising. The Director is responsible for achieving both individual and team-based fundraising goals and objectives.

The successful candidate will have a strong foundational knowledge of nonprofit fundraising, with expertise in major gifts and a track record of successfully closing gifts of $25,000 and more. They will achieve annual individual goals using performance metrics based on a moves management system of prospect and donor actions for a portfolio of approximately 120-150 individuals, including Girl Scout alumnae, Lifetime Members, families, and those inclined to support the empowerment of girls.

This full-time role is a hybrid work arrangement with work from home, at designated GSEMA offices, in communities served, and at designated GSEMA properties as needed. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Secure unrestricted and restricted individual giving support.
  • Develop and manage a major gift fundraising plan including outreach and number of monthly visits and solicitations needed to achieve revenue goals.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors at the $5,000+ level, meeting activity metrics and revenue goals $400,000 - $500,000 in Individual Major Gifts.
  • Create individual prospect strategy in collaboration with the Chief Advancement Officer and, as appropriate, Chief Executive Officer, program staff, and volunteer leadership.
  • Produce high-quality written materials for leadership giving, including proposals, letter, presentations, briefing materials, and contact reports.
  • Contribute to building a strong gift planning component to GSEMA’s philanthropic culture. Present planned giving opportunities to donors as part of major gift conversations securing 20+ planned giving commitments annually.
  • Propose and support events that drive major gift donations to GSEMA, such as private gatherings in donors’ homes, Giving Circle events, and Council signature events.
  • Maintain knowledge of general fundraising trends, current laws, and tax code regulations pertaining to charitable outright and planned giving.
  • Attend events and functions representing GSEMA at which donors and prospects are present.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of documented experience, including two or more years directly soliciting major gifts.
  • Extensive experience building internal and external relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders, including a Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment of closing gifts and developing relationships with donors is essential.
  • Understanding and appreciation for GSEMA’s mission and the capability to project that mission to prospective donors.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and influencing skills; persuasive, credible and polished communicator-both written and verbal.
  • High-energy, positive individual with experience successfully engaging active volunteer leadership.
  • Have an organized, focused and goal-oriented personality coupled with a high level of initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office software; experience with Raiser’s Edge or another leading donor database is preferred.
  • Capacity to, independently and as part of a team, plan, organize and prioritize work, while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively identify, analyze and solve practical problems and successfully manage a variety of variables and personalities; ability to adapt in a changing environment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the council.
  • Must have the passion and drive to be part of an organization devoted to the development and support of girls.

Travel: Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to GSEMA offices and within GSEMA’s service area. As this position requires approximately 50% travel and may require occasional travel outside the council service center, possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle is preferred.
