POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director, Community Impact leads and manages social change efforts using a “Community Impact” model to support several United Way of San Diego County (UWSD) Community Collaborative initiatives, programs and projects that contribute to the attainment of UWSD’s mission, vision and annual goals and objectives. The Director, Community Impact plans, organizes, coordinates, mobilizes and evaluates learning and family stability related programs, projects and initiatives concurrently coordinating projects with other departments, key stakeholders, representatives of other agencies and departments and directs the work of consultants for effective and timely results. The Director, Community Impact strives to achieve positive outcomes by leveraging individual and organizational opportunities in order to make broad, systemic change.

The Director, Community Impact provides leadership and direction for the administrative, analytical, planning, and management of programs, projects and initiatives where substantive administrative, policy, and/or technical issues require specialized analysis, recommendation, and implementation; and to perform related work as required. The Director, Community Impact, works with community partners and stakeholders to build specific partnerships for long-term results; provides the forum for setting priorities through dialogue, and examination of education and human services assets and needs. The Director, Community Impact is also responsible for supervising the Senior Impact Manager(s).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicates effectively in written correspondence, public presentations, and group discussions to advance the mission, vision and strategic plan of UWSD.
  • Community Impact Team with responsibility for strengthening and managing relationships with community stakeholders working to achieve the sustainable and systemic impact across San Diego County.
  • Leads Community Impact teammates to implement learning and financial stability programs and initiatives, execute detailed project plans, and ensure resource accessibility/availability to achieve equitable outcomes.
  • Serves as a thought leader in learning and financial stability, identifying and championing strategies, initiatives, and processes for furthering UWSD’s community impact.
  • Researches, collects, and utilizes best practices and relevant data to identify and address disparities in learning and financial stability, as a primary factor of educational and economic mobility.
  • Cross-functionally, develops and oversees measurement framework to ensure documentation of targets and regularly scheduled review of data measuring Community Impact program efficacy. Evaluates progress and determines if recalibration is necessary. Ensures that problems are addressed quickly, and appropriate measures are taken.
  • Develops and builds relationships that bring partners and stakeholders together to influence positive change in the education (K-16) and financial stability ecosystem.
  • Convenes and connects relevant influencers to develop strategic and tactical partnerships that increase the odds of educational disparities and economic mobility. Manages and navigates often complex, multi-faceted relationships with public, private, funded, and unfunded partners.
  • Creates and maintains a culture of collaboration, trust, and accountability between community partners and United Way staff.
  • Be an effective ambassador of United Way programs and initiatives
  • Manage grants and evaluate grant compliance.
  • Provide overall leadership, vision, and focus on the development of strategies to drive the collaborative approach to community impact that enhances UWSD’s leadership position in the community.
  • Participate in on-line training, webinars, and when possible, attend seminars to keep abreast of industry and system best practices and enhancements
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff.
  • Participate in Community Impact Team directors and managers meeting to provide leadership for the department.
  • Communicates strategic direction, investment priorities, and community impact to internal and external audiences.
  • Works with teammates to develop an annual line-item budget for learning and financial stability initiatives. Provides oversight and monitoring for initiative budgets.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENT:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field required (examples: public health, education, social work, human development, community organizing or urban planning, public administration, or related social sciences).
  • 5 – 7 years of related professional experience (building and facilitating community collaboratives, program implementation, work with public/private sector leaders/decision makers, leadership in the community, experience in grant reporting and management).
  • Experience in team leadership and management, strategic thinking, program development, volunteer management, research, evaluation, and report writing.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience with meeting facilitation, public speaking, and training.
  • Access to a car, current valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
  • Employee must be able and willing to travel as deemed necessary by his/her supervisor to all communities throughout San Diego County served by UWSD. Able to work irregular hours such as early or late evening hours (before or after office hours).

  • This person must be able to remain in a stationary position at the workstation 25% of the time and participate in meetings on and off-site 75% of the time.
  • This person must be able to utilize their own transportation for visits around the San Diego community 50% of the time.
  • Frequent walking or standing is required.
  • The person in this position needs to be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Hands are regularly used to write, type, key and handle or feel small controls.
  • Weights of up to 30 pounds occasionally lifted (carrying devices provided).

WORK SCHEDULE:

UWSD currently supports a hybrid work environment with a combination of remote and in-person work. The amount of time spent working in-person is currently limited, but is subject to change, and strictly adheres to COVID-19 guidelines put forth by the state, county, and the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). The typical schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, flexibility is required due to the nature of this work. Schedule may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
