Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

A position is available immediately for a Research Scientist/Faculty Specialist to build and maintain cutting edge and novel optical microscopy setups for life science applications, such as three-photon imaging and light sheet microscopy, in a new Imaging Core Facility. We are looking for a person with experience in optical instrumentation, microscope development and associated software hardware interfacing. This is a full-time position with the responsibilities being towards development and maintenance of the imaging core facility and training users in advanced microscopy systems with the expectation to also participate in research projects with faculty. The applicant will have the opportunity to work with leading faculty in fields at the interface of physics, biology, and engineering. Candidates must be highly motivated, independent workers willing to develop intellectual and practical skills. Salary is competitive, negotiable and commensurate with qualifications. Responsibilities:
- Manage the shared instrumentation, including routine maintenance, repairs, train users on advanced microscopy, and help grow the user base.
- Train users in the software used to operate the microscopes and in image acquisition, including potential assistance to or collaboration on image analysis.
- Contribute to the acquisition and installation of the latest generation microscope systems.
- Collaborate with faculty on research projects and contribute to grant proposals.

Minimum Qualifications:

- PhD in Optics, Engineering, Physics or other related fields, or Masters and at least 5 years of experience in managing a microscopy facility
- Computer skills for image analysis (e.g. Matlab or Python)
- Knowledge of optics

Preferences:

- Interpersonal skills necessary to work with a large number of people, including strong written and verbal communication skills
- Working well in teams to build and integrate the microscopy systems
- Creative problem solving abilities: our instruments will be custom built and may need to be adapted for specific imaging conditions. The person will be responsible for the operation, modification and maintenance of instruments
- Ability to work independently
- Computer hardware/interfacing skills
- Practical experience of working with imaging set ups for biomedical applications
- Some experience with building optical set-ups and microscopes
