Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

We are looking for one or two graduate or advanced undergraduate students to work 10 hours per week in the Historic Preservation Archaeology Lab. Work can begin immediately. The announcement will remain open until the positions are filled.

The Laboratory Technician’s primary focus will be to assist in the vesselization of ceramic and glass artifacts from the 17th through the 20th centuries. The materials were recovered from the former site of the Kippax Plantation.

Work will require the assistant’s presence on campus in the archaeology lab located in the Prienkert Field House. Work cannot be guaranteed if campus is closed as a result of Covid-19.

Students will be working in a hands-on environment with thousands of artifacts. This requires a strict attention to detail. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an archaeological laboratory. They will also be familiar with ceramic typologies and decorative techniques. The laboratory work will provide many opportunities for the assistant to expand their understanding of ceramic and glass artifacts that are commonly recovered from historic sites in the Mid-Atlantic region. The most important qualities in an applicant are reliability and a willingness to learn.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current UMD student ( undergrad or graduate)

Any previous experience you have working with ceramic and glass artifacts.
