Shift Leader, Dispatch Center

Class Description

Assist the Assistant Director of Public Safety with general oversight of daily operations of the Dispatch Center personnel. Perform public safety communications and related administrative duties to support College wide communications, in a centralized dispatch center, providing training and daily direction to Dispatch Center personnel.

Minimum Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older, with a High School Diploma or GED and three years police/public safety communications, clerical and related experience. Must submit to and successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation. Prior experience as a dispatcher, police officer or fire fighter preferred.  The work week is 40 hours per week, may require overtime or special hours as needed or required.

Class Specific Essential Duties

  1. Provide daily oversight of dispatch center operations and staff.  
  2. Serve as lead worker.  
  3. Scheduling of part-time staff.
  4. Provide public safety technical support for specified dispatch technologies.

Position Specific Essential Duties

  1. Provide daily oversight of dispatch center operations and personnel, answering questions and providing guidance and direction to other dispatchers and call-takers.  
  2. Schedule all part-time dispatchers and call takers under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Safety.
  3. Participate in the selection of new dispatchers and call takers.  
  4. Closely monitor call center personnel for (1) quality assurance and (2) integrity of information input into database systems.    Reviews work of other dispatchers to ensure compliance with state requirements.
  5. Prepare, update, and conduct training for center staff in dispatch, call center functions, and procedures.
  6. Provide input to the Assistant Director for evaluations of dispatch operations, systems and practices.  Recommend alternatives to the Assistant Director.  
  7. Provides input to the Assistant Director for disciplinary actions related to the Dispatch center.
  8. Troubleshoot key public safety technologies.  Reports malfunctions as appropriate and monitors repairs.   
    1. CCTV operability and retrieval of recorded evidence footage
    2. ARMS dispatch software (CAD)
    3. Emergency communication systems e.g., Whelan and Blaser and similar systems
  9. Maintain schedules in Entry Master System
  10. Assist in the planning and development of enhancements to communications equipment and operations.                                                                                         Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive.
