Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The General Repairman II is directly responsible to the Physical Plant Supervisor; performs skilled and semi-skilled work in a variety of trades, including construction industry; responsible for conducting college set-ups and takedowns of furniture and equipment required for special events and for the moving of furniture from and to each campus and as it may be required to relocate offices.
 
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs general repair work as required. 
  2. Makes repairs and adjustments to Physical Plant equipment and facilities.
  3. Assists tradesmen in maintenance, repairs, additions and alterations of building structures and equipment. 
  4. Assist in all carpentry work matters.
  5. May be required to do painting from time to time.
  6. Repair and/or install doorknob locks, door hardware, and door closers.
  7. Operate power tools.
  8. Cleans tools used in the job.
  9. Cleans work area daily.
  10. Assist in the planning, supervision and movement of set-up and takedown of furniture and equipment for special college events such as graduation, registration, festivals, music concerts, etc. 
  11. Assist in the planning and supervision of the moving of furniture for all office relocations.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English/Spanish.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in construction or handy man work with a minimum supervision; some specific training will be required after starting the job.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Preferred:
  • Having done a carpentry apprenticeship.
  • Having done carpentry project work on business buildings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Required to have general maintenance routine knowledge with minimum supervision using only a few definite procedures.

Physical Requirements 
Work is performed in a variety of settings.
Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.
May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, moving mechanical parts, or chemicals.
Specific vision abilities may include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to focus.

Work Environment
Work beyond a normal workday and at varied work locations that my include the College South Campus, which may include traveling from and to each campus.
Work outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
 
Safety 
Required to work safely and follow safety rules.
Report unsafe working conditions and behavior.    
Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Special Conditions
Immediate supervisor may assign other duties.  
May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed.  
May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
