Job description

This is an opportunity for an individual with expertise in teaching chemistry at secondary school level to join the School of Education, Communication and Society at one of the top 10 UK universities in the world. The lecturer in Chemistry Education will lead curriculum development, teaching and management on the Chemistry PGCE. The position potentially also includes adopting a leadership role for the Science PGCE programme (biology, chemistry and physics). The successful applicant will join the Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CRESTEM).

The successful candidate must be available to commence the role at the start of the academic year.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Chemistry PGCE programme, including curriculum development, teaching and management.
• Play a key role within PGCE Science through either leading and coordinating the Science programme, or contributing to curriculum development across science, leading monitoring and evaluation, or teaching across the PGCE Science programme and PGCE professional studies module, and other programmes, such as the MA Education.
• Act as Personal Tutor to PGCE and MA students.
• Liaise with partnership schools, including mentor development and liaison, and undertaking school visits to students on placement.
• Assess PGCE students’ competency and MA-level assignments.
• Review PGCE applications and interview prospective candidates.
• Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
• Ensure that course design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the School and College.
• Effectively perform academic administrative duties (e.g. programme and module leadership, examinations, admissions)
• Continually update knowledge and understanding in relevant fields, participating in Continuous Professional Development.
• Make a wider contribution to teacher development within ECS and with other departments.
• Collaborate with academic and professional colleagues on joint projects and areas of shared interest, including contributing to the academic life of the Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CRESTEM), and collaboration with other King’s departments.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. A relevant PhD qualification (applicants currently undertaking a PhD will also be considered)

2. An honours degree in a chemistry related discipline

3. QTS or other equivalent UK qualification

4. Expertise in teaching chemistry at secondary school level (with experience in the English system strongly preferred) and a track record of successful classroom practice in science education

5. Ability to work in a team

6. Awareness of current issues in teacher education and science education

7. Reflective practice and communication of educational scholarship through peer engagement, publication or conferences

8. Ability to work under own initiative and meet competing deadlines, with excellent administrative and organisational skills.

9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

10. Ability to carry out school visits across London schools

Desirable criteria

1. Experience of running a PGCE Science programme

2. Experience of engagement with external stakeholders and networks relevant to Chemistry Education
