Bader International Study Centre (BISC) is the UK campus of Queen's University, Canada which for a second consecutive year is ranked in the global top 10 of The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Queen’s University is a research-intensive environment with interdisciplinary programmes providing students with the comprehensive and nimble skills required in today’s competitive and evolving workforce. With particular academic strengths in physics, cancer research, geo-engineering, data analytics, and social sciences like surveillance studies and mental health, the university sets graduates up for excellence across disciplines.

Bader International Study Centre is located in Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex. Built in the fifteenth century and joining the Queen’s family in 1993, Herstmonceux Castle is arguably both the oldest and one of the newest parts of what is one of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious universities. BISC founders, Drs Alfred and Isabel Bader, gave Herstmonceux Castle and Estate to Queen’s in 1993 for the development of an international study centre, where students, teachers and scholars from around the world could study, engage with and learn from one another in an interdisciplinary academic environment.

BISC welcomes students in Queen’s first-year programs in Arts, Science and Concurrent Education, as well as specialized programmes to upper-year undergraduate and professional students in fields as diverse as Roman archaeology, international law and politics, global health and global project management. There is also an annual array of scholars-in-residence, researchers and academic conferences.

Queen’s University is looking to appoint a new Vice-Provost and Executive Director for BISC to lead and provide strategic academic and administrative leadership to the unique residential learning community of BISC and Herstmonceux Commercial Enterprises (HCE).

Responsible to the BISC Board of Trustees and reporting to the Principal of Queen’s University, the incumbent will be responsible and accountable for developing and implementing the strategic vision for BISC/HCE, maintaining relationships with Queen’s University bringing to realisation its strategy of internationalisation, whilst providing experiential learning to students.

The Vice-Provost should ‘open doors’, nationally and internationally, so that BISC can augment its national and global reach. They will work closely to strengthen relationships with funders and promote cross-faculty collaboration, identifying opportunities to diversify funding sources and partnership portfolios, whilst increasing research opportunities.

The VPED will be an advocate, internally and externally for BISC, overseeing policies and procedures, the control, allocation and accounting for the financial, human, physical and other resources, preparation of all forward plans and budgets of BISC and participation in its overall strategic development.

The appointed candidate will need to be dynamic, influential and inclusive. They will be an excellent networker, with a track record of successful delivery in a significant academic leadership role. Proven excellence in academic research and credibility within and beyond BISC will be key, as well as the ability to work across the breadth of BISC’s research and enterprise activities.

The appointee will need to combine the analytical capacity to identify opportunities with political astuteness, people and communication skills to deliver them in collaboration with colleagues, prioritising to maximise impact.
Queen’s University and BISC are committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace and welcomes all applications.
