As a member of the University’s undergraduate admissions and financial aid division, the Assistant/Associate Director is an integral team member charged with meeting the University’s annual enrollment goals. The Assistant/Associate Director leads and executes international recruitment, admission, and yield initiatives. Additional responsibilities include managing a southwestern-based domestic recruitment territory, including travel, application evaluation and prospective student, parent and high school engagement.

This position may be a remote position. The ideal candidate will be located in the southwestern or western United States, for regional recruitment responsibilities, or be located in Lexington, Virginia.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees international recruitment strategy, including the planning and execution of communication efforts, social media use, involvement of alumni and current students, and international recruitment travel. Closely partners with key university offices in support of international recruitment.
  • Manages the international applicant review, selection and yield of each year’s class of international students, and the use of financial aid resources earmarked for international students.
  • Educates the admission staff and campus community on matters affecting international students in the admission process and represents the undergraduate admission office to the campus community on matters related to international recruitment and admission.
  • Represents W&L to off campus constituents through active membership in international professional organizations.
  • Responsible for southwestern and western regional recruitment travel consisting of a combination of high school visits, college fairs, receptions, and information sessions.
  • Frequently corresponds with prospective students, their parents, secondary school personnel, alumni, and others, answering their questions and providing counsel about the admission process and W&L programs and opportunities.
  • Conducts virtual interviews and information sessions for all audiences.
  • Evaluates admission applications and recommends admission and scholarship decisions.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Varied work hours dependent on time zone, with some overlap with Eastern Standard Time. This position requires travel and work outside of regular business hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of work experience in selective college admissions, including international recruitment, and/or international secondary school college guidance are preferred; or a combination of education and experience from which a similar skill set would be obtained. A demonstrated dedication to a residential liberal arts education, appreciation for diversity, the ability to work well collaboratively as well as independently, and a high level of energy and responsibility are highly valued characteristics. Strong communication skills and demonstrated organizational abilities are expected. While based regionally in Southwest or West Coast, travel, evening and weekend hours, and a valid driver’s license are required.

Preferred qualifications include international travel experience, experience using Technolutions’ Slate admissions database, and a demonstrated interest and knowledge in the use of technology in admissions. A history of successful recruitment program oversight is helpful in this role. Fluency in a language other than English is welcomed.

Physical Requirements:
Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
