THE POSITION

Golden West College (GWC) is seeking a one-year, full-time, equity-minded, Counselor, Retention Specialist to provide essential counseling and coordination services in the counseling department, commencing July 1st, 2022. This is a one-year contract, categorically funded position. Reporting to the Dean of Counseling, the counselor provides educational, career, and personal counseling to current and prospective GWC students. This position builds retention through each of these stages (e.g., completing MAP, enrolling, completing math and English in their first year, preparing for transfer, preparing for graduation, and career skills). There will be a focus on semester-to-semester retention, which may involve early alert. Finally, this position will also need to outreach to new transfer institutions to build new articulation agreements, which will provide new pathways for online and non-traditional students, as well as for new programs that have developed during the pandemic. The Counselor participates in Case Management meetings; advocates on behalf of the college; acts as a resource to the greater campus and community at large; and helps to manage the campus Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool.

This assignment also includes participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The 195-day contract includes the fall and spring terms, and 20 days to be distributed between the summer and winter terms. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for the Early Alert program and working with probation and dismissal students.
  • Participate in the implementation of student success strategies.
  • Develop Student Educational Plans (SEP) for new and continuing students.
  • Involvement in committee work & strategic planning efforts.
  • Administer and interpret a variety of assessment instruments to both groups and individuals.
  • Assist with the campus Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool and tracking student activity/progress.
  • Serves as a well-informed resource for students, teaching faculty, administrators, counselors, advisors, and transfer center personnel on transfer curriculum, articulation, and related matters.
  • Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas.
  • Maintains the college articulation programs, procedures and policies as dictated by the California Education Code; California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) regulations and standards; and California Community College Chancellor's Office Guidelines and Standards.
  • Works with Vice President of Instruction, Curriculum Specialist, Curriculum Committee Chair, Transfer/Articulation teams and other staff/faculty/administrators in all matters related to articulation of courses and programs at the college.
  • Provides counseling to students experiencing difficulties and makes referrals to on and off campus resources, as appropriate, and evaluates transcripts.
  • Provides one-on-one counseling, advisement, and intervention compensating strategies for retention of students.
  • Articulates college, State, and Federal policies and regulations to faculty and staff.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Perform other counseling and guidance responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Physical Demands
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (3):
  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, OR
  • Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above.   • AND
  • All candidates must demonstrate evidence of a responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Counseling at the post-secondary level, to engage authentically with students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community college curricula and the higher education system.
  • Recent experience with articulation, early alert, and student success within a community college setting.
  • Evidence of understanding of and commitment to maintaining knowledge of local, state, and federal policies related to education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of matriculation requirements with competencies in general academic counseling, educational planning, career and personal counseling.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, parents, faculty, administrators, and staff) as well as off-campus community and education partners.
  • Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in post-secondary setting.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs to provide an inclusive and equitable education experience to the general student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning.
  • Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in counseling.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution.
  • Ability to work with computers, use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in the counseling process.
  • Ability to work with student record management, reporting, and educational planning software.
  • Evidence of ability to plan, coordinate and implement counseling projects, budgets, and special events.

Conditions of Employment
PAY PHILOSOPHY

For a one-year, full-time, categorically funded Counselor position a maximum starting range of $63,953 to $109,037 is offered, based on the 2021-2022 salary schedule of $63,953 to $152,477. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,348 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
