Job Description

The Department of Theater and Dance at Bates College invites applications for a one-year visiting position in Dance to begin August 1, 2022. Bates is an undergraduate liberal arts institution offering a major and minor in dance and hosting the internationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival. Our students represent a wide range of interests and experiences, as well as a diversity of identities in and through dance, and we foster an intentional, equitable, inclusive and engaged community. Candidates with demonstrated success working with diverse, underrepresented and marginalized populations are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have earned an MFA or other terminal degree in dance or a dance- related area of study by August 1, 2022. Also, a strong studio and creative profile, demonstrable college level teaching experience, preferably in a Department of Theater and Dance, and evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion in an academic environment are required.

The position consists of a five-course teaching or teaching-equivalent load: teaching in the studio and in the classroom; choreographing for students; advising and mentoring students; coordination with visiting artists and dance concert production.

The workload of five teaching credits include:

? 2 full-credits of cultural context courses: Contemporary Issues in Dance and Dance History

? 1 full-credit course during Short Term, titled Building a Studio Practice

? 1 half-credit performance choreography

? 3 half-credit studio practice courses in the candidate’s expertise to be taught over two semesters

In addition to teaching aspects of history/cultural context and dance composition with racially, ethnically, culturally and gender diverse content, and having a strong studio teaching practice, candidates must be qualified to teach in at least one of the following areas: a non-European, popular global, or diasporic dance form.

Candidates must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, and a commitment to collaboration in a small liberal arts community are essential for a successful candidacy.
